Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2007 mkv GTI - broken

    Hi Folks

    had a pretty sucky day...

Out driving around in the gti punching through some nice country roads out near Wisemans Ferry and engine light comes on for "exhaust" issue.

Pull over and stop the engine.

Take a look around...things look fine.

Start it back up and damn! sounds really rough - maybe only three cyclinders and engine rocking back and forth at idle enough to shake the car...so I shutdown the engine and call in a tow.

My question, is this something I can work on or should I take it to a workshop ?

Did any of the dash error lights come on?
If yes, what colour was it?

Yep The engine/exhaust check light flashed until I stopped the engine...it lit up orange

When I restarted the engine it stayed on solid.

I was planning on replacing the diverter valve on its next service...as recommended by Seb

I think it has pretty heavy carbon build-up as the power seems way down lately

Check your manual for the possible problems. Could just be a failed exhaust sensor - which is a minor and common fault.

            Yeah I hope so...

I am planning on replacing the PCV and DV when i can get it booked in at a workshop.

I had a look at the engine tonight and decided to leave it to the pros...I can manage the odd bit of maintenace, love doing brake pads and oil changes...but the FSi looks like a viper nest once you remove the engine cover...

                  Thanks

That looks much better than the Deviant/MacGyver solution.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a coil. Check with your local dealer to see if the car is affected by the current recall. You might just get it fixed for free. Not sure they'd cover the tow charge though.

Sounds exactly the same as what happened to me. 20 on coil pack.

Had somehting similar .. could drive it but it seemed to jerk and almost stall .. accellerating was the worst and if I got up to speed and maintained it went quite well.

In my case it was an intake flap. Apparently there is a motor or similar that controls the amount of air coming in to the engine. When it fails it goes to its minimum intake. They replaced it and worked all OK!

This happened to me ages ago, but i think it was because i pulled the dipstick out when the engnie was running. As it fixed its self over a few days.
