  • Is high mileage a problem for Jetta TDi

    Hi
I am looking for a Jetta 2.0 TDi to replace my Bora4-Mo which had a flooded engine. I noticed a number of late model 2008 Jetta whch had high mileage 100,000 KM (50KM a year!). Is that a problem for these cars or should I just look for an earlier (eg 2006, 2007) model with a more reasonable mileage over its life i.e 80,000 + (25-30km per year)

i am guessing those 100k plus cars are ex fleet / rep cars there are a few companies out there using jetta's large boot low tdi running costs. having just handed back a falcon (junk pile) at 3.5 years old i wouldn't touch that type of high mileage car. the seat will have a worn outter edge as you get in and out of it much more in those miles, they are unloved and abused and generally in car parks alot

Good advice. Will likely go a an earlier model if there is not much differnce with reasonable overall mileage and possibly better maintenance schedules

What is the history of the car? The engines are good for it, does it have a service book full of stamps. I personally have no problems with a car that has been used and serviced. 100000K is nothing really for any modern car.

I can't see the seat wearing out in 2 years, no matter how it was used.

My S3 is 11 this year with 200000+ on the clock and the seats are like new still.

If you don't do many miles in a year, the mileage will become 'more average' the longer you have it. Yet you have had a newer car.

        Buy on condition not mileage.

I've heard of some TDi's running with over 400,000km's on them. Well maintained TDI's are bulletproof and 100,000km means the engine is only a toddler. Remember is a diesel not a petrol engine so they last a lot longer. Some fleet cars are very well taken off because they are maintained religiously on time and always use genuine parts. A regularly driven car will probably be more reliable than a garage queen that's hardly driven.

My concern is that 100,000k in 2 years seem like a fair bit of travel. I will check service books and condition before commiting to a car

Mine was ex-fleet, 98k and fully serviced over 2.5yrs. Looked and worked like a new car, in great condition.

If the car has all of the services and doesn't show significant wear on the seats and other parts, then you might be OK.

However here is a reason not to: Europecars Jetta rental cars. Make sure it's not ex-rental!
Definitely avoid such cars - lots of short trips and different owners.

Was gonna suggest my old Jetta from up here on the Gold Coast (2007/MY08 TDI) but it seems to have been sold. It only had 67,000km on it, too!
