I think VW are crazy for doing goodwill repairs out of warranty. Why should the people who didn't think ahead get the same coverage as the people who did and forked out he couple of grand for extended warranty?

Its called bad PR, how many 3-4yr old cars have you heard of which have had mass a/c compressor failures? its about keeping the customers quiet and preventing a class action law suit. If it was just a once off then your comments would be valid but in this instance its obvious there is a major issue with the compressor unit which is resulting in premature wear across multiple mkv's.
