Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Cracked Front Grille - Not Happy Jan

Does anyone know a good therapist I'm not sure how I can deal with this.

Really pi**ed about this. Not even sure how it happened. Someone must have nudged me in a car park. This cant even be repaired without being obvious.

      Ouch.

Im confused as much as you as to how it happened, but if it got caused by another car, wouldn't there be some other damage as well? Like paint being scraped off?

I suspect that that exact point is a stress area for the silver grille. I have replaced the grille after someone reversed into the front of the car and had the same crack. About 6 months later it appeared again so I suspect someone has bumped the front again but I can't really see damage to the number plate or anywhere else. Must only take a very small flex in the plastic to crack. It doesn't cost a lot to replace it (well it does but it is all relative to the cost of the car). Now I have just left it as it isn't that obvious.
What I was thinking about it getting some CF wrap professionally applied to the silver grille. But I can't find anyone around my area to do it

I'm glad, well not glad, but interested to hear someone else has had this issue. Sounds like a credible theory. I guess I'll juts have to ignore it as its not very obvious but I will always know its there.

Hey buddy, sorry to hear about this. I like the carbon fibre wrap idea mentioned above. Either way, chin up.

I had the same thing a year or so ago. Spoke to the dealer, no evidence that the car had been hit or nudged so had the whole grille replaced under warranty.

Could be worth a shot if you still have warranty.

Thanks for the advice. Although if you look closely at the photo, you see that the license plate holder is also cracked which might suggest someone nudged me even tho I had the plate holder cut and plastic welded to fit my custom plate(which is where it is cracked).

I had exactly the same issue, i just got it plastic wielded along with the license platle holes and got it all resprayed black. A lot cheaper than getting a new one, and looks like new on the outside.

                      hmm. Interesting.
How much was the weld and respray ? As the silver grille is ~ $300 from memory.

Not sure how much exactly i had front grill fixed, wheels sand blasted and rear valance all resprayed in gloss Black for $700.
But looking at the picture again my crack was only about 3/4 as long and didnt go over the edge so i dont know how that will go with the wielding. But a new grill as a LOT more than $300. Go ask spare parts but its around $1000 from what ive heard.
