  • Alternator broke down :(

I just had 04 golf 5 tdi serviced in a VW dealer two weeks ago. I told the tech that the engine faulty indicator was on for a short period of time (few times before i took it to the dealer due to i couldn't book my car in for a service) and there was a strange noise coming from the alternator/ air con compressor side before the service. After that, the tech told me there was nothing wrong with the engine and the noise was caused by a faulty air con compressor. The tech then reset the error code for me without telling me what the code was. He suggested me to change the air con compressor. I than decided to fix the compressor later as I did't have sufficiant fund for it.

5 days later the engine faulty light came on again. I took my car back to the same dealer and they did a scan for me and told me it was the breaking light which caused the problem (I don't understand how they are related at all). I told them the noise was getting worse and they found nth wrong with the engine and the car was safe to drive (that's what the tech told me) and he reset the error code again.

On Wed night, I drove my car and the noise got worse. I took it to another VW dealer Thur morning and they found out the alternator was stuffed. The alternator shaft was bent and it needed to be replaced. The car was not safe to drive anymore. The new dealer told me that I was lucky the car hadn't broken down while I was driving on Wed night. I then asked them why didn't the pervious dealer pick that up 2 wks ago and the dealer told me it just happen sometime (both dealers are under Bayfold VW).

What I'm not happy is I told the dealer that there was something wrong and they didn't check it properly!!!! And now I have to pay for a brand new alternator. I mean I'm happy to pay for the repair of my faulty alternator if they checked throughly at the first place. I may not have to pay for the whole alternator and belts. I reckon I'll see how's my car going after the repair and write a complain letter to VW australia!!!

    Tony.

You'll find that most modern alternators when they fail require replacement rather than a repair. And if they were pulling it out, you might as well take advantage of it and replace the belt for piece of mind.
That said, it's poor that they didn't diagnose it earlier, I'm guessing that the mechanic never quite got his head around those fiddly electrics as an apprentice.

I reckon I'm very lucky this time (nth major has broken). Imagine if the faulty alternator stuffed up other parts, then I've to pay a lot more. This is what I'm not happy about.
