  • MK5 2.0t Exhaust: Muffler / Resonator Modification

    Started a thread discussing the differences between Mk5 Jetta and GTI exhaust systems, which was lost when the forum went down. So thought it may be worth starting another since a search didn't bring up much information on here.

    I would like to increase the noise of the factory system on my Mk5 Jetta Turbo DSG, making it a touch louder and also increasing volume of the DSG 'pop' in between changes. Hoping to get a more prominent note without being over the top and droney.

    VARIATION's between Jetta & Golf Systems (from a quick look underneath mine and a mate's GTI);
    - From front of car not far after downpipe, BOTH cars appear to have the same cat converter - is there two in the system? (i.e. one in the dump also.)
    - Moving back just before the rear axle on the passenger side, the Jetta has a large muffler (similar style to the rear mufflers on both cars), where the GTI has a much smaller circular 'hotdog' style muffler.
    - Continuing to the rear, the Jetta has a second large muffler situated on passenger side only, where the GTI has a long but thin looking 'briefcase' style muffler almost stretching the width of the car below rear bumper.

    Piping diameter seems to be the same, so I'm putting the fact that the GTI seems quite a bit louder down to the variation in their exhaust muffler/resonator set-up.

    A few questions;
    - Has anyone done or know of people deleting one or more of the mufflers on a standard system? Would there be any performance gains or would you be better off replacing with a smaller sports muffler?

    Corrections, Comments or Additional information welcomed on above, so this can become a good reference for anyone looking to do exhaust work on a Mk5 without simply purchasing an aftermarket item.

    Cheers, anthony

    Just be careful i have a mate with the same car as u chasing the same result and no matter.what he did by removing or changing rear silincers and resonators and mufflers it just gave him really bad drone so bad in fact he ended up buying a milltek system and got his desired result
    Good bye GTI Hello Golf R

      If you do not touch the resonator it will not drone at all as it's a turbo car not a naturally aspirated vechicle. There are plenty of links on the golfmkv.com forums with people removing the rear muffler also known as the 'suitcase muffler delete'. It actually sounds quite good as I've heard it first hand and even cruising at 100km/h there is little to no drone. Power wise you might be losing some at the top end but it shouldn't big that big of a deal unless you were trying to squeeze every hp out of your engine.

        Generally the muffler at the axle is a resonator, and the final one is the safest to play with, but tests done by 42DD showed the axle one to be the most restrictive. Sure I now represent them, but I've not seen anyone else offer a pure resonator delete and then post several videos of the results. Sadly they are GTI only, but it gives you some idea as to the results. Definitely heed the advice of not deleting it without trying something proven, as drone makes a car unbearable to drive for very long.

          Interesting you say the final one is the safest to play around with removing etc
          As the axle res. is extremely small on the GTI, compared to the full size one on the Jetta.
          Are you able to point us in the right direction of this modified GTI and videos?

            Sure, was trying to avoid it looking like a shameless flog, but here you go...all the Australian delivered prices are up on my site in my sig. The resonator is pretty expensive once delivered to be honest, could get one put on here for less I would think, plus it doesnt suit the Jetta.

              Seems a lot of the product on 42dd looks very high quality, however from my contact with John Pelton, Jetta versions are still some time away from being completed.

              Thinking about trying a custom route for now and see what the result is...
