  • Noisy Golf 5 TDI

    Hi all,

My Golf 5 04 TDI is very nosiy while driving >60km/hr. I took it to the dealer and they said it maybe caused by the gear box or the front wheel bearings or both. They suggested me to change the bearings first as they're cheaper.

My question is, if there is something wrong with my DSG, what kinds of symptoms will I get (apart from noisy)? Cos I found there is no power lost of my car at all (still accelarate very well).

    Thanks,

    Tony

I can't believe that they cannot pick a wheel bearing over the gearbox? That's poor.

Did they have a tech drive the car at all?

I really don't know cos my wife dropped it there and on the service report they said the bearings and the gearbox are noisy.

My next question is, if it is really the gear box, how much does it normally cost for a rebuild?

Never heard of a DSG getting noisy before.

Wheel bearings; yeah, but you'd hear it at pretty much any speed.

        Scallopped tyres, perhaps?

I don't think it is a tyre thing. I suspect it is something in the front this time. The noise is unacceptable.

I haven't though about the engine is because the dealer said there is nth wrong with the engine (I suspect it was the camshaft). Is there a possible it is sth wrong with the engine?

Maybe try another dealer to get a diagnosis.

If its bearings, the noise would increase as your speed increases, it would sound like a low frequency droning noise. Gearbox, if my memory serves me correctly, should emit a higher pitched noise, much like a chatter.

                  Any others with similar sentiment?

That's what it does. The noise increases when the speed is increasing. It sounds ok at low speed (<60ks)

Christ we could be here all day making guesses - take it to a professional who knows what they are talking about and can pinpoint what it is fairly accurately - don't go changing bearings just because they're the cheapest - there might be nothing wrong with them. Hell you could have q nail in your tyres making noise as it goes around. I once had a noise coming from the car and had a number of people making expensive suggestions on what it is and what I should replace - turned out it was a pair of pliers left in the engine that was vibrating when driving.
