Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    CSR's R32

    Hi All,

On Friday i'm hopefully taking delivery of Big Yellow's R32 and so have spent the last 2 weeks researching all possible manner of modifications I could do to make this MY car.

Terence has already done a great job and the exhaust is a bonus that I would probably never have done but opens up possibilites for other mods down the track.

Ok, so this is what I eventually want to get done in a 1-2 year period, listed by order in which I want to do them:
    1. Customised license plate
My 20th birthday is coming up and have asked the rents if they'd buy me customised license plates for it. They didn't say yes obviously to try and keep some kind of surprise element but i'm sure they would do it.

My first preference would be if my colleague will sell me his plates, he has 'PB1526' in slimline black/white font, which means Pietro Beretta 1526. The backstory to this license plate is that I work for Beretta Australia and is a company that I will be with for the rest of my life. Pietro Beretta is the original founder of the company, and one of their most commonly used slogans is "A tradition of excellence since 1526" which is the start of the company's life.

If I can't get that plate, I will probably go for something personal, like 'KHHH' (inside family joke). I'm not interested in doing something related to cars incorporating R32 or VW or anything like that.
I'm torn as to the colour combination i'd want for it.
Black with white is pretty standard for a custom license plate, so I would maybe want something a little bit different.
    Options:

    * White with blue font (meh)
    * Blue/Baby blue with white font (This would be interesting depending on the tonality of the car in respect to the blue plate..I would need to see it in on the car)
    * Black with white font (I know these would look OK and would be in theme with the black wheels / grill but not a big fan of following the crowd)
    * Red with white font - THIS would be a winner if the combination looks good. Red stands out very nicely and would compliment the rear lights.

    Plate would be slimline.
May look at positioning the front plate off-centre but concerned about whether it will block air coming in or have a negative technical aspect. Suggestions?

    2. RNS510 DIY Retrofit with aftermarket bluetooth
This I will get done as soon as i'm done with the purchase of the car and I have time to see how much I have left in my wallet and what my immediate expenses will be for my holiday in March.
I was almost talked out of doing this mod but I am the kind of person who needs a GPS to get home from work, well not quite to that extreme but my head is not built for navigating anything.
The bluetooth will need to have FULL functionality with the RNS510 and steering wheel controls, including voice control with the RNS510 (the LED/star version). The microphone will need to be of a good quality as well because we have 5 sales reps at work on the road and there is a HUGE difference between the two that use the Holden factory bluetooth and the one who's got an R36...Even though he told me he got his bluetooth done for $300 through a friend, I will need to inquire with him about that.

    3. S2T Performance paddle shifters
$250 may be a lot to spend on questionable looks, but to me they look fantastic and if I have to do something I will go for the best of the best, so stick-on paddles are not for me. I will maybe convince someone to buy these for my birthday ).

    4. Gruppe M Air intake
This one here is a must. It's hard to justify spending $1,000 for an air intake and it's not even about the looks because to be honest i'm not a huge fan of carbon fibre, but as I said if I have to do something I want to make sure it's the best and that I'm never going to have to think twice about what i've installed.

    5. Grill
OK, I haven't yet decided on this one, but I will throw it out there. I don't yet know if I like the gloss black grill. I definately like that it doesn't have a plate-holder but to be honest, the chrome grill looks a bit more classy and understated. I can understand the theme of the black wheels / black grill but i've seen cars with black wheels and chrome grill and it looks just as good if not better (wheels stand out more). Will check back on this topic after the top 4 are done .

    6. Wheels
Uhm...All I know is that eventually I will want to replace the wheels of the car. The gloss black RS4's Terence put on are great but I want something in a MATT black finish. I saw a few cars with the black OZ Superleggera and they look fantastic but I will be honest in saying that I don't know much about wheels/rims etc etc. 2 weeks ago I didn't know what an air intake was so I think i've come a long way already, but all I know about wheels it that whenever someone mentions 'BBS' people's mouths water.
I priced up a set of BBS wheels at random and..well..NO WAY am I going to pay that much for a set of wheels.
Maybe when I get to this stage I will be more experienced but I think for the next year I can keep these ones as they are.
Actually, if anyone reading has a decent skill with photoshop, what do you think of the Audi R8 V10 wheels in an 18" instead of 19" would look on the R32 powdercoated matt black? They would either look really good or really ****, I don't have much of a mind for images either.
    Picture here:

    7. What's next?
Ok, I REALLY would want a sunroof but that's more of a childish 'want' and the one I was looking at getting done was about $2,500 fitted which is at this stage too much money for me to throw away (since it would not add $2,500 to the car's resale value).
I think that about does it for interior mods as I'm not interested in beauty bezels or carbon fibre trim or anything like that.
Equally not interested in carbon fibre external panels or any stickers/badges/tattoos.
I will leave the car debadged from the back as I agree with Terence in that it gives it a much cleaner profile.

That about wraps it up, sorry for the long post but had to write something i'm going mad waiting!!!
Any comments / questions answered would be GREATLY appreciated and if this is not the right section to post this please let me know or move it.

    Thanks in advance to everyone!

What's the cost of the controller/switch? Think the first time I looked at it the price scared me .

Sway bars not for me! Don't want it to be too stiff, it's not going to be a race car just a daily..

are you keeping the V3 coilovers?

Haldex/switch can be had locally or can ship in from o/seas

I think you will be throwing 1k away with the air intake. Just leave it alone.

Isn't there some kind of exhaust flapper mod for the R32 that I keep hearing about? If I had an R32 that first thing I would do its release that glorious V6 soundtrack. Probably the best sounding V6 on the planet.

Not sure, but all I know is that this car already sounds amazing.

Bazzle you're right, I picked up the car this morning and drove about 3 hours total and already think it is very very loud. I'm starting to think it might be TOO loud for my daily hour drive to and from work.
Even when lightly pressing the throttle this thing growls like a beast, put my mum to sleep 3 times on the way home from the city haha..15 minute trip.

I will leave the air intake alone for now, and having just realised the car doesn't have an MDI unit in the centre console I will need to put that in as well..
