Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Need advice for part's pricing

    Hi all,

I just had my Golf 5 TDI 2004 serviced this morning. The dealer found that there is something wrong with my air con compressor and he recommened to replace the whole unit. He quoted me $2000 for the compressor. How much does a comperssor cost?
Also, he fournd the front wheel bearings (left and right) are nosiy and he quoted me $400 each. Are the pricing reasonable?

    Thx,

    Tony

Neither are items I'd go to a dealership for once out of warranty.

Get your AC checked by a competent specialist (the pumps on Mk V's are prone to failure, though, and usually replacement with another brand is advised) and wheel bearings & seals can often be sourced from a third-party supplier below (sometimes very much below) the official spare parts prices.

For the compressor the part numbers for your car are 1K0820859F which is replaced by 1K0820859QX which is replaced by 1K0820808BX. Thats as far as I can tell anyway. You can get 1K0820859F new off ebay for about $500.
