Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MKV R32'ers....GTI'ers?..

Hi all... Quick ? for you R32'ers....
What are the options for power upgrades?....
What have you guys out there in the real world done to make your R32 kick...

is chipping an option on the MkV, ive seen adverts for the MKIV but nothing for the MKV....if so what was the power increase?..... Cost?... & basicly what else can be done apart from the usual Exhaust/air intake....?

all this info is much appreciated!!!.. Thanks heaps!!.. all these ?'s ive been asking over the past few months is helping to decide what car i finally get...started by looking at a Mk1 rebuild....then to a VR6......then megane r26... Now umming and arring between the GTI and R32.....

With the GTI about 10-15grand cheaper, that extra cost could be spent on Mods..... Meaning will i then have a GTI with more grunt and styling then the R32?..seen specs on 300+ horses for a gti... but havent seen anything for the R32...? delemma ?

at the end of the day... which goes harder?.... mario.

If you want aftermarket tuning, regardless of make, a forced induction engine will always yield more bang for buck than a normally aspirated engine.

In short for the $10K saved on the GTI you'll be able to make it comfortably quicker than the R32 in a straight line. Getting the power down and reducing torque steer could be a new issue for you to deal with if you spent all that $10K on power upgrades.

I know of a GTI with ECU reflash, turbo-back exhaust and CAI that has done a mid-high 13s run at WSID. A stock GTI would probably run mid-high 14s.

Deciding between the R32 and GTI really comes down to personal preference and budget.

as minigolf says, you'll always get "easy, big" power increases out of forced induction car.....but

consider drivability, the conditions you drive in, warranties, etc. Ever driven a Mazda3 MPS???? For me, highway miles and mountain driving helped seal the deal. Mind you, I haven't driven a "tuned" GTI...if anyone is offering??

Most chips on an R32 MkV will get you between 7 and 14kw. Air, exhaust and headers are the way to gains in the R32....headers alone reportedly give you up to 30kw! (they are next on my list ) And there is always some tasty twin turbo conversions........

Oh, by the way....have you heard an R32????

Hi Mario, go the GTI I think.
I am happy with the power and fuel consumption and I have all the usual mods. Flashed, intake and exhaust. At Sandown last August it proved to be a lot faster down the straight than the R32s. And that was with 4/5 people on board.
I am not out to upset any MK5 R32 people here, they are a great car, just saying that I am more than happy with my choice.
          Happy choosing, Andrew

I have a BMC panel filter and a full Milltek.

Before the milltek i had 125awkw and 142awkw after.

Forced induction to come so watch out GTI & WRX.

yep...there are expensive upgrades available for TDI out of germany and the uk.

                        Bigger turbo and exhausts.

Amdtechnik in uk and b&b in germany

something may be available through Eurocardriver here in sydney or mtm through tcca as well.

I had a 2.0 TDI before the r32 and I would recommend that you chip it with REVOtechnik available here in oz. No need to send the ecu to Germany like I had to with the TDI 2 years ago.

Damn I thought the standard system on a R32 would be pretty free flowing, guess not. That is an awsome power gain! Sound now would be unbeatable.

I have a chipped GTI and find I have no trouble with torque steer and with the T/C on traction is no problem. With traction off though if you boot it in second gear it will loose a bit of traction , drivability is great and as good as standard if not better.
