  • Towing with 118tsi 7DSG

Guys, I have a question that I cannot seem to find any answers.
I'm in the throws of buying an alloy boat that weighs 1000kg all up on a braked trailer (Jetta towing capacity according to specs is 1400kg braked)..... however being a 7DSG is there anyone out there that has had some experiences towing a similar weight.....
My intentions (at this stage) are not to tow long distances but more within 10km of home to and from the ramp.

My concerns are in regard to the clutches, not so much the 7DSG internals as I have read in an article the g/box internals are strong.

    Thoughts guys.....

What I would be concerned about is fwd on slippery boat ramp with that much weight behind the Jetta. You might have a traction problem.

Not a concern there.... I've just been to 3 different boat ramps in south Sydney and watched 4 different front wheel drive cars pull out various boats... the biggest was a 5.1m quintrex behind a mitsubishi lancer, it ripped it out no problem at all.

You'll have no problem with the Jetta then.

Yeah but as per my original query it's all about the transmission....... will the real 7DSG please stand up??
As for the engine, all owners know for a 1.4L twin charger, it pulls harder than a school boy at a peep show..... trans is my query.

hmmmmmm, alot of reads, little responses, so I think I'll tow it with my wifes Holden Astra instead.

If you do a quick Internet search for "golf dsg towing" you'll find several reports of people in Britain with 1.4 TSI Golfs towing caravans with no worries. Presumably if VW thought there was any cause for concern when towing with a DSG, they would claim a lower towing capacity on DSG models.

I Tow a 4.55 Polycraft boat with a front wheel drive nissan maxima. I have a transmission cooler fitted and I tow from the Blue Mountains to Sydney and I haven't experienced any problems in the last 5 years

You're very unlikely to exceed the torque limits of the 7 sp DSG (because you don't need to stress the DSG), as you mentioned other front wheel drive cars pulled the trailer on the ramp and they had and used much less torque in the process.
