Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

    2008 Golf GT - Oil stains on rear shock absorbers

    So I am planning on buying the car, and I sent it in for a check with RACQ.

    All was fine except for "Both rear Shock Absorber: Minor oil stains on shock absorber - monitor"

    Would something like this be covered by warranty? Is it a deal breaker?

    It would be covered by warranty, but even if you have to buy a couple of shockers it's not a deal-breaker.

    Find out what they cost and deduct it from the price you were going to pay.

          oil stains = leaking shock absorbers = need to replace rear shocks

          I'd be pushing for them to fix them before delivery (check them over yourself afterwards to ensure they have been replaced)

            It can be normal to have oil stains on shocks.
            A stain, is different than a leak. A little bit of oil can make a large stain, esp when dust soaks into it.
            An overfill when new or a very hot run or workout can also cause this.
            For the top lip seal to work it must stay lubricated.
            That is why RACV said to monitor not replace.
            Chances are if you extend shock and wipe clean you will never see the oil again.
            On the other hand if the seal is damaged you will see oil quickly and shock performance may suffer.

              Yeah I called the guy who did the inspection. He says it is probably nothing serious, but he noticed it so he thought it best to make a note. And I guess at the end of the day... it is still under warranty!

              Super excited about taking ownership on Monday!

                        It's the petrol model, so no worries there.

                        I just noticed that I have the squealing that some people have reported.

                        That aside, it's a great ride! Love the sound of the turbo spooling.

                          What squealing?

                          If it is the spooling sound you hear after take off (1500-3000 rpm) then it is the Supercharger you are hearing. The turbo doesn't kick in till 3500 rpm or thereabouts.

                            If you mean the brakes, get used to it. Typical VW brake pads. I still have heaps of pad left but I'm so tempted to just get rid of them and replace them with something that doesn't sqeal.

                              The spooling sound is awesome! Makes me a little more lead footed that I already am.
