  • Cruise Control Problem

Hmmm had an issue with the Cruise Control in my GTI yesterday.

Basically the on/off switch didn't work. Nor did the cruise control dash indicator light up.

    Restarted the car, no problem.

Any known faults and/or easy fixes for this?

Had the same problem. Got the stalk replaced under warranty.

If you or any of your mates got VCDS cable, run a scan through to see if there was a fault code.

If you don't have one or can't get hold of one, take it to the dealer and ask them to scan it for you. If it didn't work once, would have thrown a fault code.

pretty sure this was a common fault ages ago... seem to recall lots of people on here complaining of their cruise control stalk not working then working next time the car was used... my jetta also did this for a while and had the stalk replaced under warranty, dealer was aware of the issue and had changed a few of them.

            that's no good..

the issue is the car is now out of warranty.

I've never even used the cruise control, so it may be been faulty since it was in warranty.

Well, I'm taking my car to South Yarra VW for a coil pack recall next week and will discuss with them, if they will fix the indicator for free on the basis of goodwill.

jsof, that sounds unlucky, especially 6 months ago from a dealer. My car was purchased there, so no point taking it back there.

It doesn't matter when you bought the car, if it's within the 3 year warranty the item will be covered by warranty. If it's out of factory warranty, you have a 3month/5000k statutory used car warranty. But as you're at 6 months, that warranty is also expired.

Also, it doesn't matter if the device/switch/item was never used in the first 3 years - if the warranty is expired, the switch is no longer automatically covered. Same as if you only travel 60,000 in that time, the last 40,000k of possible warranty is forfeited.

Cost of extended new car warranty - about $1500, less $400 for cruise stalk replacement - net cost of warranty $1100.
