Hi,
Thought I’d share the events of the last few weeks involving the purchase of my second hand Jetta after spending a fair amount of time reading posts, mainly negative ones, involving DSG transmissions, dealerships and VW Australia.
I purchased my 07 Jetta from a reputable and what turned out to be, excellent dealer in Melbourne. In the proceeding weeks before Christmas we checked out a lot of Jettas and wanted an automatic TDI one which after seeing many examples. We were shopping from Horsham which is 3.5 hours from Melbourne and we decided after 3 trips looking at cars that we’d settle on this one having done the checks, test drives etc.
After getting it home, I realized that the downshifting in the box was abnormal. It was not picked up on the test drives as it seemed to be worse when the transmission/car was warm which is apparent in a lot of DSG problems. The car was bought only 700kms and 15 days out of warranty and had a full service history. It was out of warranty nonetheless and I bought it knowing this.
We’d thought we’d try to see if anyone was willing to listen and try to help. I’ve read how so many people say they would never own one of these out of warranty. I was devastated as I felt I was handballed a problem.
I took it to Ballarat Autohaus whilst one of the local car dealers in Horsham has just started with VW and I felt I was a greater chance there to at least prove there was something not right. I must say Autohaus in Ballarat was perfect in every way that you could expect. The foreman test drove and picked up the problem straight away, even though it was a fairly minor one compared to other DSG problems he had seen. However he thought the clunking and kangaroo hopping was too significant to ignore.
After leaving it with them for a couple of hours to do some diagnostics, I came back to talk to the service manager about what had happened having just bought this car. He checked out the service history, noticed that it had been serviced properly and only by VW dealerships. He took it on his own back to discuss this with VW Australia and seek a goodwill warranty claim with them, seeing we were the second owners and it was just out of the period.
A couple of weeks passed and he came back to us and said that VW Australia was willing to pay all the costs bar about $700 for a replacement mechatronics unit. We were thrilled. We rang the car dealer and he said that he was also disappointed as he was unaware and came to the party by offering to pay the $700. The car has been fixed, picked up and is driving perfectly.
I consider myself extremely lucky, having gone into the situation not expecting any help, but trying anyway. I cannot stress how good a business Ballarat Autohaus is. They are what you want a car dealership to be. They only have two badges BMW and VW and is great place to look at cars and talk to people. They are big enough to know their stuff, however not too big that you wont have the personal service. In the last couple of weeks I walked into plenty of dealerships that you could look at new cars in the showroom for 45 minutes without anyone talking to you and doubt if anyone would care if later you had a problem.
