Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GTI vs old 911

Had a fang in my colleague's Porsche 911 today (1997 vintage, 996 series), and was kinda surprised that it really wasn't all that quick. Pretty good torque from low down, with a nice powerband after 4000rpm, but all in all it really didn't feel any quicker than my APR stage 1 GTI. Interior looked a bit dated, not a patch on the GTI. The only real plus with the Porsche was that it had a lot of road presence and you can't help but feel special driving it. Not sure I'd spend >$70k on one...

1997 is a 993 series. Having driven a 996 I'd say it was about the same as an evo and a fair bit quicker than a GTI. Was giving it full beans mind

I think you are selling the Porsche a bit short. I'm no particular fan but the handling of the 911 and its general driveability are pretty special too.

but still no traction control..... must be for all power sliders
Have you noticed that there aren't much difference between last 4 models of 911? Only engine power improvement

Pretty sure this was a 996. Cost $70-something. Basically exactly the same as this (see link below to random car advert), inside and out:

I'm sure it handles very well (couldn't really push it too far, work colleagues's car), the brakes were good, sounded beautiful above 5000rpm... all very nice, but nevertheless underwhelming.

Personal choice, but for the same money I would buy an E46 M3.

As an aside, amazing how far car interiors have developed over the last 10 years, at every price level.
