I would have expected better fuel consumption figures than 6.5 /7.1 on freeway driving.....i frequently get 6.5 or less on some relaxed freeway driving in the GTI, i suppose the GT would be a hell of a lot more economical around town.

Me too, but it's probably still a bit tight - that economy was on its first 1000km - I drove it from Melbourne to Adelaide. BTW, the city economy is about 7.8 at the moment. Still, I expect both figures will be different by about the 3000km mark.

Welcome Barneyboy.
Congratulations on your purchase. Great write up there on your impressions. Economy should improve as it loosens up. Keep us posted on things eh?
Cheers, Andrew

Yeah i figured around town would be where the difference is really noticeable...saw a while GT this morning, looked really nice!!

They dyno'd a DSG GT and saw 121kW AT THE WHEELS!
They figured it was a fluke or a VW 'ring in' press car. So they found a second GT and saw 117kW! We all know you get about 25% - 30% power loss through the drive train, so a figure of about 95kW was the expected amount. Unless VW have got an incredibly efficient drivetrain, that puts the GTs power at around 150kW. Not likely, I know, but how do you explain their figures?
So now there's a conspiracy theory getting around about why VW are under-estimating the GT's power output.
My GT doesn't feel anything like that sort of power, but I'd certainly believe a figure of 135kW or even 140kW. It's definitely slower than a GTi, but not all that much. BTW, the dyno was at Swinburn TAFE, so you wouldn't expect anything dodgy with the equipment or procedures.
I'd love to see a GTi on the same dyno to establish whether VW are uniformly under estimating their products. It would explain why the GTi performs so well against its more powerful competition.

Did anyone see the Car Show piece about the GT on Channel Packer?

A) It was a dyno dynamics dyno, which are known to give higher than normal figures
B) Drivetrain loss for FWD cars is about 15%.
I am thinking of getting a new GT in the next couple of months. Would anyone know when the 08 GT Sport is going to arrive? Should I expect much of a price drop in the GT when that happens?

GT & Sportline grades will be dropped from the lineup fullstop.
GT Sport replaces both and is due just before or after Sydney Motor Show in October
Im pretty sure we will get the diesel version according to the articles ive read off here.
At the wheels means power its getting at the wheels and not at the flywheel. The factory quote of 125kw is at the flywheel so drivetrain losses means that the fwkw is lower when the car's power is measured on a dyno. I think
yup... but vw is notorious for underestimating their power figures... especially on the gti i think. theres groups who have fully tested all their figures, cant remember the sites though sorry off topic
