We just test drove and then ordered a MY08 Golf GT w/ dsg auto, bi-xenons and leather seats for delivery in Nov 07. This car is FWD with 1.4 ltr supercharged and turbocharged engine. Goes hard from a dig with boost hitting at 1250 rpm. Great car using same platform as all the other Mark 5 Golfs and comes with 17" rims to boot. This car will be my wifes but once we get it I will drive and review it here.

I'm thinking it would be quite a fun car to drive, but I'd be worried about the number of parts involved in one - turbocharged and supercharged! Let's just hope it's nothing like the G60. I've heard that was prone to breaking down quite easily. That's just my unedumacated opinion though.

To be honest I am not that happy with them something that is worth the price of a GTI and only in 5 door Not for me.

Good on you fasti, well done mate! They go very well for a 1.4! I think very regular oil changes would be my suggestion.
                  Cheers, Andrew

I've driven both DSG and manual and I rate it. Maybe suspension is a bit soft and the transition from super to turbocharging it could be confused (a lack of responsiveness around 2500-3000rpm) which happened a couple times. I got down to 6.5l/100km on the freeway, but it'll go hard and rev hard if you want it to. It's a good car, but you do wonder about the cost of fettling one post-warranty...

They are a great little car. Pros - Its quick, economical, different, same to insure as a GTI, Paddle shift & Boost guage (Sort of). Cons - Looks like a normal Golf, Too close in price to a GTI, only available in 5 door. I drive one every day, keep saving and get a Golf GTI. Just my 2 cents..

                            Golf GT

Took delivery of my Tornado Red DSG GT 2 weeks ago.
I'm pretty happy with it, as it fits what I want a car to do (for me).
Much as I love the GTi, it was a little hard-core for me to live with every day. Its dampers are a little harsher, seats a little too hard to exit from every day. It's OK if that's what you want, but not for me any more.

The GT provides me with 95% of the thrills for $5K less, with some pretty impressive economy numbers.

Love the handling, love the ride, love the insulation. Wish the steering was a bit faster, and the DSG still coughs a bit on start occasionally. But the DSG is just a great piece of hardware.

Love the motor. Averaged 7.1 on a 110kph 1000km trip, yet the little bugger will still pull like a 14 year old - torque everywhere - from straight off idle all the way up the rev range, any gear, any time. Brakes seem OK, not awesome or anything, but competent enough.

Had an engine warning light appear (a yellow outline of an engine block) that stopped me from using over 3000rpm (limp-home mode). The dealer was unable to tell me what was wrong, but resetting the computer made the light go away. Who knows?

Other than that, the car feels like I've had it for years, such is the comfort factor. I'm still unfamiliar with all the controls, yet I feel like I've had the car for ages. A friend said the same thing after 20 minutes behind the wheel.

Some folks have questioned the complexity of the twin-charge engine - citing possible reliability and servicing problems. VW claim that they have flogged a dozen and a half of these engines to 300,000km without failure. Being German, I'm sure they did. Personally I don't think the TSI is any more complex than the V-TEC engines I'm more familiar with.

Life moves on, along with technology, and along with reliability. Think how much time we used to spend under the bonnet of our cars not that many years ago. Now we rarely lift the thing. A service manager friend told me of a Hyundi Excel he serviced that, at 100,000km, had NEVER EVER been serviced. Ouch!

A couple of purely cosmetic items that I'd prefer: don't hate the DSG shift knob, but like the GTi's better. Likewise the GTi pedals and steering wheel (although there's really nothing wrong with the standard wheel). I do, however prefer the GTs black dash trim to the GTi and R32s silver stuff. Would probably like the folding mirror option they get overseas, and the iPod interface really ought to display track info, not just 'Track 06' &c..

Love the sunroof - it's a really nice bit of gear, and pretty good value compared to aftermarket items. Too bad the tyre pressure monitor isn't included - I'd swap the Winter button for it any day.

On another point, the Golf GT R-Line (available in Germany) looks pretty interesting. You can see it here:
                            <http://www.volkswagen.de/vwcms_publish/vwcms/master_public/virtualmaster/de3/modelle/golf/golf0/rund_um_den_golf/golf_r_line.html>
                            Love the 18s!

It'll be interesting to see how the diesel GT takes off - it may change people's minds about these sorts of cars (performance + economy). One thing for sure, once the initial 420 GTs are sold, the next batch will be badged GT Sport. Other than the badge, apparently the only other change is the black centre bumper (rather than body colour). I haven't been able to spot anything else that will be different. UK versions have two fabric choices, but the paddle shift is optional, as is the multi-function wheel. Who knows? Our are built in South Africa, so the UK comparison is probably flawed. Anyway, enough rambling. I'll post a pic or two when the weather improves. Hope this has been vaguely informative. I'm just off for a bit of a drive now...

I had a couple of G60s and they were fine if you looked after them. Neglect them at your peril. Loads of cars give you trouble when you're the 10th owner and 8 of the previous ones never bothered to service it.
