    Hi all,
Initially thought of new polo gti (2010) but then felt that its too small and wait is too long. Then came to 118tsi (demo or near new) and now thinking of 07-08 GTi from private seller..I am going to test drive one Gti today. I will be taking this car on novated lease. Can you please help me wit following questions on 07-08 Gti.

    1. Is it advisable to buy gti which has run 50-60k? I plan to keep this car for long. Does anybody have issues above 100k? I mean gearbox etc..

    2. lookin at this one
2007 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI DSG V MY08 Private Cars For Sale in VIC - carsales.com.au

    does the price look ok?

    3. How much roughly comprehensive insuarance and extended warranty cost?

    any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

Hi avvashi, I was in pretty much the exact same situation as you.

VW Extended warranty varies, but it will be between $1500-2000 for 3yrs - it's supposed to be closer to $1500, but it appears that there is a variation from dealer to dealer. You MUST be inside your current warranty though for a VW warranty, so an 2007 MY08 is out for that. I just put a deposit on a 2007 MY08 yesterday with a ... holden dealer, and they are giving me a 3yr / 200,000km warranty on the car for $1900 (but you negotiate with them to put that into the drive away price). The GTi had 51000kms. The dealer had a sister VW shop next door under the same name, so you know [well... assume] they can honour such things.

Mine was very similar to that one you linked to but had satnav, 3 doors, no bluetooth and was going for the same price, in canberra and from a dealer (canberra charges a premium). I'd definitely haggle down, imho that's a few thousand over what the car can be bought for. Maybe the 5doors and bluetooth equal out the difference of satnav, im not sure. Still, you can get that for cheaper imho, but convincing a private seller of that may just chuff them and they may end up resenting you

And lady driver doesn't necessarily mean your car is better off. Nor does it mean the truth or that it's been babied as is tacitly inferred - it's potential false economy - it's a GTi after all, not a tdi or fsi. I checked out a lady driver car (supposedly, I have my doubts) that reeked like smoke, had chips on the bumpers, scrapes on the wheels and the engine sounded like it was poorly maintained - it didn't go as well as the other gti's i played with. The interior was also scuffed and somewhat greasy I think from yellow cigarette fingers. It's almost like they somehow rolled back the km's.

Buyer beware. On a novated lease you can factor in most of your maintenance costs etc, so you're really better off imho buying from a dealer where you can purchase an extended warranty. With a private seller you begin to limit your options for warranties if the car is more than 3yrs old.

    just my humble opinion(s).

For comprehensive insurance, check out http://www.gio.com.au for their online insta-quote. They are cheaper if you go online. For me (27yr old male with zero insurance history, a previous license suspension but no other bad driving history and 5+ yrs of driving), and parking the car in the driveway, it was ~$1300/yr. Your novated lease co should factor this in and the insurance quote (for me atleast) will likely be roughly the same as the GIO quote. Other factors such as suburb, history, etc can impact the cost of insurance.

    Nik.

As you are looking at buying a DSG, if it hasn't already had it factor in the cost of the 60,000km DSG service which will be in the vicinity of $600-$1000.

For insurance, your circumstances are unique to you, best of getting quotes yourself.

As for that one you're looking at, I once met a lady named "Brett", but that was in a shady bar a long long time ago....

Shouldn't be an issue with the 60k so long as it has the service history. As mentioned above, see if it has had its full 60k service, otherwise, the price seems ok considering its loaded with options.
I also recommend that you have a quick look at the brake pads/rotor to see if these will need replacement soon.

100,000km service is bloody expensive too, but that's the same with a lot if cars...

Hi Nik and others..thanks for the input..I'm learning a lot on this forum..I just tested that red GTi..Brett was a guy and he was looking after the sale for his wife/girlfriend..the car looked good inside out...well maintained..60k service is done..loved the ride..didn't find any thing wrong but I might be wrong..I don't have that much technical knowledge..he mentioned that brake pads might need to be looked at in the near future..i asked about the warranty and he said you can get the extended warranty on it..he has the car on lease too..

what are the other benefits of getting the used car from dealer apart from warranty that you mentioned?? Dealers used cars look very expensive to me..there are some low kms private cars with much cheaper price than dealer...as long as I have warranty, is there anything else that suggest dealers are good option?

            thanks again for the help..

It doesn't quite matter whether you buy it privately or through a used car dealer, IMHO. Be very careful and remember to read the fine print on the warranty offered by non-VW used car dealers. Make sure that you are clear on what is covered by warranty. If you want peace of mind, get the car checked out by a VW specialist such as AudVolks, Volks Power, Auto Union Deutsche, VolkWerke etc.

Another point to consider is the model year. The car is advertised as a 2007 MY08. Given that the rego expires in July, it could possibly be a MY07 rather than a MY08. If I remember correctly, a car is only badged as a MY08 if it has a built date of August 2007 onwards. Have a look at the VIN number. If it is a MY07, the VIN number should be WVWZZZ1KZ7U******. If it is a MY08, the VIN Number should be WVWZZZ1KZ8U******. MY08 will be valued more than a MY07. According to Redbook, the difference in value is $1,200. A lot of sellers advertise wrongly thinking they have a later model year given that they took delivery of the car in the second half of the year.

All the best for your hunt

I must also state that mine is a new car warranty on the 07, so its different to a normal used car warranty which is usually limited to $1000 cover, that's the only benefit and reason I did it.

If you can get a vw warranty extension, don't worry about going through a dealer. Save the cash.
