  • What to buy for under 30k :)

Hi everyone I'm new! I tried to use to search function for this but nothing appeared what I was after.

I currently own a 450hp ba xr6 turbo which is extremely thirsty on fuel and handles like a boat.
I have driven the 2006 gti and really liked it.

My budget is 30k. What year should I look at, What should I look for when buying a used gti. Maybe some carsales links so I can get a rough idea.
I would like a manual also.
Are there any major issues with these cars? I cannot find much information at all.
Is servicing and maintenance costly or reasonable?
Just really after as much information I can get before I put down 30k then relize I bought the wrong one.

I mainly do highway driving and I like to go for a quick drive through the mountains on the weekend.
    Thanks!
    Todd.

There are a few minor issues with the MKV GTI, but no real show stoppers.
A tune, suspension & bars should get you on your way nicely, Give it another 6 months as there should be some MK5 bargains to be had.

Do the usual checks, service history, interior/exterior condition (check wear on side support of drivers seat).
Also, have a quick look at the brake pads for how much material is left, and check the brake rotors to see if they are heavily grooved (will require machining, or replacement which is a fair few $$$).

You shouldn't have much of a problem finding a good manual model for under 30k. Goodluck.

          Thanks for the responses!
Also thanks for the link schoona, Thats the exact color I want also

Is the servicing and maintenance for the gti's a reasonable price?
The main thing I am concerned about is the clutch, As the clutch in my ford cost me around 2.5k

Really appreciate all the help and information I can get so please keep it coming.

Also is there a thread somewhere that I can see what mods can be done? I have read about and would like to do the APR stage 1. But am unsure on suspension etc that can be done,

Mate, you should also look at MkV R32s as well, sometimes - just sometimes, you might strike a bargain on carsales. If your predominant mode is cruising, you wouldn't find a nicer GT tourer than an R32 (call me biased), but the sound of the V6 is heaven. However, I do acknowledge that if you want to do a bit of thrashing, then a modded GTI would probably be a better bet. Anyhow, my 2cents worth. Good luck.
