  • Anyone changed their pedals?

    Greetings all,

Just wondering if anyone here has changed/upgraded their pedals, as I am thinking about putting some OEM GTi pedals from the states into my Jetta. From what I can see changing the "loud" pedal looks like a bit of a DYI challenge with all the electronic bits associated with it, so I'm wondering if this can be easily achieved before I go ahead with the upgrade.

    Cheers,

    centralaxis.

I put the .:R pedals into my GT and it was a piece of cake. There's only 1 plug (with securing clip) going into the accelerator pedal and 1 or 2 torx screws. Once they're out have a look at the new pedals to see how the clips can be opened using a screw driver or similar, prise the clips on the existing pedal, remove and swap over. 10 mins later you're done!

Buying hint: Make sure you buy RHD pedals, they're a little more expensive but are the only ones that'll fit due to different orientations. Better safe to double check before purchasing! Lol

Yeah, I was looking at doing this too but I couldn't actually find any pedals that had the correct orientation for the accelerator. If you have a look at yours and then have a look at the adds that are claiming to sell the right hand drive versions, I wasn't convinced. Plus I am not confident in pulling plugs out and having the computer tell me that there is a fault code, all because I pulled a plug out!! These cars are too smart for their own good sometimes!!
By the way, I couldn't work out if it is a matter of keeping your existing pedal box assembly and just attaching a metal pedal or whether the assembly is changed. We just had the whole pedal assembly replaced in our jetta because it played up.

Ps. How do you get coloured writing in your signature? I can't see any option for it when I try to do it!!

Like Paul I installed .:R pedals in my GT as well.
As said, it's pretty straightforward, with my only issue the slightly weird clips that hold the loud pedal down. But just take a close look at how they're fitted and remove them carefully. From memory, there are 2 clips, orientated at 90 degrees to each other.
Good luck - it's really quite a simple upgrade!

          Thanks for the replies gents,

Seems like a relatively simple exercise, even for a stubby-fingered unco like me... For anyone interested, I have found a forum with detailed how-to instructions (apologies if this has be posted anywhere on this forum before): VW Jetta / Golf V DIY guides: How to: Replace the gas pedal

          Cheers,

            A very good DIY...

However, there are instructions enclosed when you purchase OEM VW (Votex) sport pedals.
            Installation is as above though...

Please be aware, when I did this in my 2007 Passat 2.0T FSI it required a throttle adaption via VCDS.

May not be required in all cars though...

Will you be buying locally or breaking Gerry Harvey's magnificent, generous heart by avoiding the GST on international purchases?

ebay UK often has sellers offering RHD DSG pedals - worthwhile to check for comparitive pricing - usually the sellers are in central Europe.

I've read that the OEM GTI pedals are better than the R set due to the rubber bits.

For anyone who's upgraded on a GT or Jetta or Golf -aside from the bling factor, do they feel any different in use? Slippery?

Not slippery at all Bizi, the R pedals do have raised rubber inserts too just a different shape than the GTI ones. It is just a bling upgrade though - unfort the kit doesn't include a can of .:R exhaust tone Lol.

My worry with getting pedals is the pulling out of the plug. As ope126 has said. It is more than likely going to trigger a fault code as soon as you pull it out. Geeze, these VW's are too smart for their own good sometimes!!!

No fault code, only a throttle adaption was required.
Mate you can pull the plug with no issues what so ever.
The instruction do also say that you "may" require coding.

Bearing in mind these instructions would be for authorised dealers who are installing these, they would probably scan for faults / apations etc as part of there normal installation process. That is not to say that you can not do them yourself...

We did a Throttle Apaption on VCDS, not to be confussed with a Throttle Body Alignment that was quite common to do on MK4 GTI's (I know from experience!!!).

I'll be avoiding the GST and VW stealership markups and looking to buy from o/s, unless I can source a preloved set locally from anyone willing to let them go - which isn't likely to happen unless its come from a car that's been written off.

I'm only looking to purchase a set that is VW OEM, and I have seen the UK ebay products out there and they are about 30% cheaper than sourcing them from the US (not entirely sure why they stock RHD units, but anyway...), but I'm not willing to risk sourcing something from central Europe (despite how cheap their booze and women may be - lovely people too, I was there a few motnhs ago). Although I have a feeling that these units may have fallen into the pockets of Skoda employees who are sick of their kornor.

                      Cheers,

Don't know if it matters, but I did the mod with the key out (no battery disconnect), radio off and had no faults thrown at all.
