  • GTI transmission whistling noise - please help

    Hello,

I own an 06 gti dsg which I just recently bought 2nd hand from the 2nd owner. I have a strange screeching noise (almost like a boiling kettle which turns into a loud screech before disappearing completely all of a sudden). The noise was first associated with a faulty intake flap motor but unfortunately I'm realizing now my vw dealer was just too lazy and busy to check out the noise properly bcos after taking it to a mechanic for a differant issue he picked up the noise was coming from between the gearbox and the motor so sounds like a transmission problem. The noise only happens when the car is deaccelerating or braking and generally soon as I accelerate it will subside straight away, it becomes very loud when I stop after driving before I turn
Off the car. The noise is a bit inconsistent as sometimes I don't hear it at all but lately it's gotten worse.

Has anyone ever had this problem or heard of it? Any advice would be helpful

    GB

Do you notice loss in power? is the car stock? might be worth looking at the diverter valve or the PCV valve..

hello, sorry for the late reply.

I have definately lost power, sometimes feels very low on boost whereas other times it feels a bit better (however still not 100%). but i have associated the loss in power to the broken air intake motor which leaves the flap open and allows more air to come through (this is how i understand it anyway). apparently it is common to lose power with this kind of problem.

I told my private mechanic about the noise rather than going back to the dealer as they are flat out, my mechanic doesnt seem to know what the problem is yet but will have a better look at it when he replaces the broken motor flap hopefully this week when the part arrives. Furthermore, my mechanic also discovered an oil leak in the turbo and thinks the turbo is on its way out with only possibly 12 months or so left in it (i hope he is wrong or there is a solution to help fix or maintain it) either way its not good news - seem to be having a bad run with this car, hopefully my fortunes will turn.

I will keep you posted on any updates with the noise - seems to be a very strange problem and i cant find anyone who has ever heard it before. fingers crossed nothing serious.

btw the car is stock.. i havent made note of the pcv or diverter valve yet but will mention it to my mechanic. thanks for the advice please keep it coming.

      regards

sounds like I had the same issue on my car nearly 6 months ago. Took it to the dealer so they could hear it and it was the pcv valve. Easy fix and the car has been fine ever since.

the dealer told me that you should get it changed asap, otherwise the engine will have serious issues in the future.

finally got VW dealer to have a good look at this noise after every other private mechanic had no idea what it was.

Not good news, apparently the flywheel needs replacing... theyv copped me a $2300 bill for it aswell so I will definately try second opiniion and look at some quotes aswell. I havent been told yet exactly why the flywheel needs to be replaced but apparently its wear and tear

Cant see any point getting anyone else to look at it as it looks like you already have seen everyone you can!
Get the dealer to do the job. If it is the flywheel, job done

              diverter valve?

Are you sure it's not the famed faulty diverter valve? I had mine replaced under warranty recently, it sounded like a kettle/loud screaming banshee and then eased off in pitch slowly after the engine was turned off. i had to drove the car off boost until it was fixed.

I asked my mechanic about the PCV and the diverter valve and he said that it couldnt be this problem as the noise wasnt coming from that area

cant seem to find anyone on the forums that have had a similar noise resulting from failing DMF so maybe im the first lol. lets just hope it fixes the problem as its definately not a cheap job, $2100 for a genuine DMF replacement so im trying to find a cheaper DMF from overseas
