Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New member looking at MK5 GTI's

    Hey all,

My name is Simon and I've been looking around this forum for a few days and have decided to sign up. Been looking for a new car and had originally been deciding between a liberty gt or a golf gti, however after test driving a gti a few weeks ago, my choice was made.

My budget is around the 25k mark and im looking for one with dsg and perferrably leather seats.

Im having a look at this one soon:

    http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...al&PriceTo=414

Just have a few questions for you veterans, because i am still quite new to the golf scene.

    - How much am i looking at for the 60,000km service if they havent serviced it yet?
    - How much for a 15,000km standard service? and dsg maintenance?
    - What are things i should be asking and looking for when i see the car?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have a happy new year all

    Hi Mate,

60km DSG service is ~1350 from a dealer, you might get ~50 off if you haggle. if your lucky. Through a independent garage it'll be ~600-750ish.
15k is ~400 at the dealer, ~250ish at an indy. I gte my oil done every 7k5 for about 150 at a indy.

when looking at the car, check to see if its got DSG issues, stuttering on take off, or in reverse uphill.. slowly. if its still in warranty (good as you can buy extended FACTORY warranty)
check for a full service history and signed books.
when you take it for a drive if you hear the subframe "pop" and move around when cornering hard the bolts are stretched and its had a hard life.

Apart from that they are pretty solid. they all rattle, and the DSG is sometimes a little weird when picking the right gear, but you learn to drive around it.

    Have fun!
