Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk 5 R32 or Mk 6 GTI?

    As the title says.

Tossing up between these two cars. Amazed at how cheap the insurance is on a new GTI, love the sound of the R32.

Either case, both would be manual. Just don't like DSG.
    Audi S3. Sold
    Golf R. Sold
    Citroen DS3 Dsport. Sold

Was in the same position 3 months ago. Went with the MKV R32 and could not be happier!

P.s. Manual is also the only way to go! =D

Do you intend keeping your current S3 if you get one or the other?

It would be a manual R32 with Short shifter, Gruppe M CAI, coilovers, sways, sprintbooster, tune & a few other things.

My cents worth. I think if you bought the mk6 GTI it would be a great car, fantastic driving dynamics, easily tunable, nice interior, a class leading car. On the downside, I think the resale is worse than the R32 which you can get for a good pice now.

I would definatley own a mk6 gti but there isn't one minute of the day I wished that I had one over my R32. If had a gti I would always wish that I still had the R32.

Tough one. I drove my brother's APR'd Mk6 GTi fairly extensively and have to say it's impressive. I dare say it's driving dynamics is better than the R32 - nicely weighted steering, responsive engine and fantastic brakes. In the wet may be a different story with the AWD in the R32 giving it a distinct advantage. Also I don't have to remind you of the legendary engine note of the R32..

Test drive both cars and decide for yourself.

I would like to drive a mkiv with apr tune to compare. How is your R32 with APR tune? I find mine now has strong midrange punch and great responsiveness. The brakes are also brilliant. As for steering, I felt the R32 was a bit vague until I put in some coilovers and sway bars, feels more like a go cart now, ultra responsive. As for driving dynamics, the haldex gen 2 takes care of this from stock, in race mode you can really feel the power going to the back wheels, great for hills driving. This was another area the stock R32 lacked. The exhaust note and no turbo lag are also definate bonuses imo.

The S3 is on the market. Had it for coming up to 3 years. Great car, and it is the longest I have ever owned a car (I get bored quickly) but fancy a change.

Looks like I'll be doing some test drives in the new year.

I'd never considered an APR tune for the R32 but might be worth keeping in mind...

The APR tune is great. Mid range is definately stronger, esp torque is very evident at lower revs. Yes, the engine seems more responsive too. It was good bang for my buck.

How do you find the ride comfort with the coilovers and sway bars? Did you install both at once or coilovers first? I am interested to know if the coilovers alone retains the ride comfort.

Just don't expect significant difference as you would after flashing a turbo. The APR tune for the R32 has made my car more enjoyable to drive for sure.

Had the same dilemma 7 months ago and went with a DSG R32. It has since been flashed with an APR tune and i couldn't be happier!

I cant help but smile to myself everytime is see a GTi. They are just everywhere and i always feel i own something quite unique!..... And that exhaust note, there are not many cars out there that can compare

Great to hear, people seem to be selling their R32's. I always look twice whenever I pass one on the street.
