had the dsg replaced in my jetta yesterday.
the drive home was a completely different experience than the last year of driving.
fingers crossed with this one.

The nature of the fault depends on what needs to be replaced. I've replaced more comlete transmissions than just the Mechatronics on it's own, at a ratio of some thing like 5:1. Meaning; I've only ever replaced 1 Mechatronics unit.
Complete gearbox change. It had been playing up for months. Reset performed then mechatronics changed then another reset etc. Finally got authorization to change it.
When I has the resets and mech unit changed each time it drive much better for about a month or so then started to play up again. But at no stage was it as good as the new one in the car now.
Best part about this whole thing is that I never had to argue with the dealer about whether it was normal or not

I wonder how many other people driving around with defective DSG's without really knowing. I know of a guy who took his car for service & the dealer replaced the DSG. He didn't realize it was faulty, but he sure felt the difference between them after it was replaced.
there are probably quite a few that dont realise its not working properly as you have nothing to compare it to unless you can borrow someone else's or get a courtesy car from the dealer etc..

When I recently drove a demo R and R36 I noticed that they had less of an abrupt start off the line than mine and also there was less "thinking" time in manual mode when I selected a down gear. But I put it down to them being newer iterations of DSG. I really dont think mine is faulty. I have heard of people resetting their dsg. I would like to get this done. Not sure how, if you need vagcom or something.
not sure if resetting can be done with vagcom but had mine done twice at the dealership... it is usually the first thing they try if a customer complains about the performance of the gearbox.
if yours is jerky off the line then i would get it looked at. i was told by the dealership it should not be like that.
not sure what gearbox was in the R but understand the R36 would have the same one my jetta had as well as the new one. So i think they should behave the same. I asked the dealership about a software upgrade for the gearbox and they stated there was none at this stage.
AFAIK any engineering change would've occured when the 7 speed dsg came out.

fair point I might get it looked at before warranty runs out next year. Its not jerky just hard to get a smooth take off, mostly abrupt but I always thought this is the nature of the dsg.
mine was the same at times... seemed like it was trying to drop the clutch instead of easing it off for a smooth take off... but mine was also jerky at times like it was modulating the clutch instead of easing it off.
