MKV Jetta retro fit Paddle Shift sterring wheel

Hi
When I ordered my Jetta, I ordered the Paddle shift steering wheel.
It wasnt dellivered and a sort of refund was made...

I want the paddle shift steering wheel.
I asked VW to source one for me.
This turned into a bit of an issue.
new Wheel $1500
new control module $1500
fitting $?

I had expected to pay for a new wheel and fitting, but the control module comes as a bit of a shock!

I didnt go ahead with it.

Anyone done this and can provide info?

I believe you can just retrofit them.
Try ebay for a EU jetta wheel with paddles and see how it goes.

the only issue will be the airbag imho.

TMTuning has some Mk6 GTI steering wheels for cheaper than what you'd pay at VW. I'm not really sure of what else you'd need to do for it to function fully.

I'm interested in this because I'll probably be doing this mod sometime late next year.

I think if it had of been me i would of insisting that the the contract be honored and made them retrofit the steering wheel , how much refund did you get i bet it didn't even cover the cost of just the wheel alone?

I could be wrong but I know people have had a lot of troubles making mk6 wheels work on mk5s, because they use different communication protocols.
You could get any mk5 based wheel with paddle shifts (GTI,R32,R36 as well). Grab the control module under the steering column as well and you're good to go.
I did the same for my Caddy to go from the standard hard plastic wheel to a leather multi-function one. It cost me $400 all up in parts (sourced from a wrecked car), although not new it's certainly better than $3000!

Yes but remember that the later model Mk5's are have basically a Mk6 interior (like mine), so it could be easier than you think.

I'll most likely be retrofitting a GTD steering wheel so the stitching matched with the trim.

MFSW p/n 1K0 419 091 BC TDL (p/n with DSG paddles unknown)
MFSW Airbag Harness p/n 1K0 971 584 L
MFSW Control Module p/n 1K0 953 549 AJ (superceded with AL)

Note: Stock SW control module p/n 1K0 953 549 AH has been tested (and recoded with Vag Com) and does NOT work with the MFSW. Control module p/n 1K0 953 549 AF has also been reported not to work. Control module p/n 1K0 953 549 AK has been reported to be used with the MFSW with DSG paddles.

Note: Some have reported that they needed to replace their slip ring with p/n 1K0 959 653C. Since I had no problems with my slip ring, I'm not sure exactly what the incorrect slip ring even looks like.

Tools Needed
* Required tools. All others will just make your life a whole heck of a lot easier.
* VAG-COM and Hex+CAN cable
* Wrench 10 mm (to remove battery connector)
* Square Bit 12 mm (to remove steering wheel bolt)
* T25 torx bit (to remove lower steering column cover)
* Pocket knife or strong small blade
Precision flathead screwdriver 2.5 mm or 3.0 mm (to remove airbag wires)
Adjustable Torque Wrench (steering wheel bolt at 37 ft lb / 50 Nm)
Trim Tool (to disassemble steering column)
Mechanics mirror or small mirror (to look behind steering wheel for airbag removal)

We've probably lost a bit of discussion on this thread, but I recall from other forums that for MkVs, a slip ring, highline CECM, some other controller and Mk6 cruise control stalk are the usual items required to put a Mk6 wheel on the oldest MkVs, especially those without the highline CECM already.

Then newer, higher end models have some bits and may just require the wheel, stalk and slip ring. I'll try to get the links to some US & Euro threads.

Most interesting to me was someone in the UK who put in a R32 instrument panel into their TDI140. Of course this required lots of updates and I'm still not sure it's going to work without lots of adjustment (e.g. tacho to suit 4 not 6cyl, possible speedo calibration etc).

Stephen8512 had or has such an instrument panel; I'd chickened out of trying it but maybe should look again.

Some of these threads noted people seeking to update wheel, MFD to the white LED one and the Mk6 climatronic (for US people who may not have climatronic).
