  • 2.0 TDi injectors getting tired?

    Hi,
our 2005 golf 2.0 TDi is coming up too 200,000 kms and really bellowing black smoke.
Ive been to two mechanics and after both of them trying to put a injector flush through the system have told me that the injectors are on there way out or need a full rebuild.

My question is where can you buy them new? besides a dealer (cant see them on ebay) and also for bushes as they are all starting too get tired. im deciding if i should replace the injectors / bushes and shocks etc and keep the car for another 5 years or look at trading in for one with less km's... would appreciate your thoughts !

    cheers
    Tim

Did either mechanic do a scan for fault codes? Be a shame to throw money at injectors if it's something else.

      Check the basics first.

      Air filter, fuel filter, EGR.

Hmm, as above and also check the intake system for clogging up first.

          this was my first though.

with EGR, very common for intakes to get 'gummed up' and to have a very noticeable effect on the performance

My thoughts exactly, I think its amazing you made it that far without EGR sludge problems.

Good indicator of a trashed EGR is a large oil stain around the general area.

Quite noticeable as soon as at 30,000km and it is amazing how VW technicians do nothing about it when people take their cars in for servicing.
I asked my dealer to fix the leak around a lower right intercooler hose, gave them hint that oil is getting in the intake system and they replaced the O-ring on the intercooler pipe.

Still, 200,000km. Nice work. There's hope for us all!

What service station fuel are you using ??
Have you noticed a decrease in performance, fuel economy, anything else other than just increase in black smoke.

It bellows black smoke when the throttle is anything over 50% depressed. The first mechanic put some expensive injector flush and it was a little better for a short while, then came back. I believe that the flushing system is piped directly into the injectors bypassing the system, not just an additive. The second mechanic said they (injectors) really need pulling out and totally serviced or replaced, he mentioned that they are very finely calibrated and its not just a mater of putting new seals in they need to be recalibrate and he knows of no one in Victoria that can do this properly? Im not aware of any codes that came up.

As far as fuel is concerned we usually go to the BP station or Mobil. But i never normally put any additive in.

Performance overall seems fine, maybe a little more lag as the turbo spins up from idle... but nothing too bad. Fuel consumption is a bit more, but nothing super excessive.

I will try and find the EGR and see if there is any oil stain or get the mechanic to look at it.

Where would you go to get a suspension bush kit? get original or an after market kit?

really appreciate all your comments. and by the way, popped over to the dealer to see what a change over would be to the new mk6.... 30k drive away..... i've decided to keep my golf for another 200k's

Pop into the diesel section and look at the thread on cleaning the inlet with one of the specific products for doing so, cheap insurance and will only help. It does sound like injectors, but if the inlet is clogged, and your airflow is down, it'll smoke. I would look into new injectors too, from the US, somewhere like Kerma, if they do end up needing replacing.
