  • 08 GTI sold.... now what to buy?

sold my 2-door 08 GTI DSG, sunroof and leather...with just 26,000km on it! Sad to see it drive away...first time I'd noticed how nice the red calipers looked against the graphite blue paint

Now I'm in the strange situation of not knowing what to go for around $42k

4-door Golf 6 GTI tempts...but I know it will be bumpy and noisy for long distance family travel (yes...quieter perhaps than the MkV, at least according to 'reviews'!) :0

thinking Passat v6...but haven't driven one. Wonder how 'perky' it is, and how good the AC is?

    or...Ford G6E Turbo!!

or even a 2nd hand Lexus Rx350. All reasonably different cars, except that they all should be good long-distance tourers

Depends what you want. Personally I would go the Ford G6E Turbo, I think its the best all rounder and those things are just monsters in a straight line, really comfy, cheap to buy and service, beautiful 6spd Zf box. Cons: Fuel consumption, its a ford, resale, did I mention its a ford so things will probably fall apart but for your price range you could probably get one which still has a few years left on warranty..

Having owed a BA GT as my last car, as awesome as it was ( I still miss it ) you never really could escape the feeling you were in a taxi.

Lol, so true. I once asked a Taxi driver what he drove as his regular car and he told me he had another Falcon (it was a Ghia though!) ...why...

The new FGs have much improved interiors compared to the Bx series.

          It's actually decent.

Drive train with 270kW turbo straight 6 and 6 speed ZF gearbox is superb.

At least drive it if you are considering one.

Have a look at the Skoda range.
Octavia or Superb could be a worthy alternative.

When I decide to update (no plans as yet) I would be seriously considering a Tiguan (TDI of course) you should be able to pick up a nice used one for around the $40k mark. Personally I wouldn't touch another Ford after my last experience with a BA MKII XR6. If I was going to buy a Tiguan, I would buy that one.

A mate of mine just bought a new G6E Turbo, it's a pretty smoth ride. But it's white, and white Falcons in Sydney either belong to police or taxi fleets!
