Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • APR Tune, Carbonio... now what?

Friends, I need your considered opinions on a dilemma I face.

As you know from previous posts, I have an 06 Jetta TFSI. Earlier this year it received an APR Tune, which boosted performance considerably. I managed to hold off until Monday just gone before submitting to the modifcation gods and adding a Carbonio CAI. This doesn't seem to have added any more power but throttle response is better and it looks damn cool! Many thanks to Guy and Alex for their efforts and excellent service.

So now I'm thinking "what next?".

    The obvious choice is an APR Turbo Back Exhaust (with a complimentary APR reflash to match). I have two concerns about this;
    1) The noise factor. I like the sound of a nice sports exhaust but this is the daily car and used often by the wife with soon to be born child in back. I wouldn't mind a subtle note but it would need to be very subtle, particularly at cruising speeds.
    2) The cost. The APR TBE is $2500. That's a pretty serious wad of the hard earned. You could get a custom stainless exhaust for around $1500. Is the APR exhaust really worth the extra dollars?

    A few points for consideration:
    - I could just get the downpipe for $1200. This would limit any noise increase and save money, but will it also significantly limit the gains i.e. defeat the purpose?
    - I think Guy mentioned that there is, or will be soon, a new muffler for the APR exhaust that is bigger and therefore quieter. Could be an option.
    - If I got a custom exhaust I could just ask them to make sure it was suitably muffled to my taste. But how would this work with the APR Tune, presumably I would still need the APR Tune suited for a sports exhaust?

    Anyway, comments and thoughts appreciated!

    Cheers,
    tofo17

$1200 for the downpipe sounds rediculous...?

Noise isn't that bad and is a very sound for the turbo back, a TIP wouldn't go astray I'd say

Sorry Mk3vr6, what's the missing word between "very" and "sound"?

          Nice

Sorry there tofo, but it does have an awesome sound with a turbo back, Tiny's gti has one with quad exhausts and it sounds like an r32.

sorry tofo! mk3vr6 seems to forget he has a vr6 and the laws that work with NA cars dont always cross over to forced induction cars.

My dump pipe was locally made for about $700odd ceramic coated and made a slight difference in power, but the cat back exhaust really opened her up.I have ditched the MTM silencer and just stayed with the MTM rear box($1200 approx). Its not overtly loud outside ,but inside its not at all obtrusive.I did have a vr6 before with larger exhaust(with kids) and that WAS REALLY LOUD! inside and out.but this is nowhere near that.Hasnt guy got a test car or another customers car that you can hear??
I did actually go for a drive in a customers mk5gti at MTM workshop and that had a eissenman double pipe exhaust and the cabin sound was at a minimum.

oh ,I just remembered tofo, exhausts that are TUNER eg MTM,APR,OETTINGER etc are TUV approved and have to conform to EU sound regulations whilst giving you more power(TUV approved=tested),so the sound is not that much greater especially inside the cabin.Should come with a decible test certificate if it has TUV approval.

sorry steve,I thought he was talking about a TFSI motor and the sound it makes.

My GTi has the full APR system and while it makes a tad more noise inside it isnt at all annoying or obtrusive. The gains are fantastic and the quality is fantastic. I have posted pics of it fitted in the Mk5 section.
I am not sure if the APR tune give the same gains with other exhausts?
If you dont get the ECU upgrade to suit whichever exhaust then you will more than likely get a fault code thrown.
I know this as by just fitting the APR system without the reflash to suit it then you do get an oxy sensor fault code.
With my own Golf, I felt the improvement was half that of the reflash.
No, I dont have any dyno figures, just driveability power.
                  Happy hunting and decision making,
                  Andrew
