Just took the Golf GT DSG for a test drive – what a fantastic jigger!

The TSI engine feels brilliant. I could not discern any change-over from supercharger to turbocharger – just a seemless surge of power. Drivability is tremendously refined, given the technologically complex nature of the engine. It didn’t quite have the GTI’s relaxed, “torque everywhere” characteristic, but felt amply powerful when accelerating through the gears.

Ride was a tad better than the GTI, but the body not quite as well tied down damper-wise. Still more than acceptable, though. I guess whether or not it is better depends on your priorities.

Interior feels a bit less “special” than the GTI – closer to Comfortline/Sportline models.

Overall, the new engine is a tremendous achievement – seemless, smooth and powerful.

I just am a tad perplexed at the market position of the GT. I expect it may replace the 2.0FSI Sportline models in the longer term.

Yeah, seriously impressive, Mik Until I drove the GT I was 100% set on the GTI, now I'm thinking, hmmmm, fuel economy..... Tough choice. Will have to give it some more thought.

        Hi Guys.

can you tell me does the new GT already have the larger multi display
        function. (just curious)
VW aust tell me the new MY08 Golf/jetta/gti will have this feature.
MY08 started build on the 1/7/07.
        Thanks neil.

Latest MOTOR mag says not that much fuel consumption difference when you give the GTI and GT a bit of stick.

I'm not surprised. But I wonder what the difference would be around town in go-with-the flow driving?

Just answered my own question courtesy of the Euro fuel consumption tests

Can't do formatting, so the results below are, in order, MPG for GTI DSG then GT DSG
              1. Urban cold 26.4 28.5
              2. Extra urban 45.6 48.7
              3. combined 35.8 38.7

If those figures are accurate, I'll take the GTI, thanks.

MOTOR magazine said it well in their GT vs GTI comparison.

"Do you really want to look out across your driveway every morning and wish you'd saved for the Big Gun? Thought not."

Fuel economy differences aren't great enough to not go GTI. Just depends on how much one can spend.

Think of the roads that they could actually build if they just put all the fuel taxes back into developing a decent national highway system. Even if they took the max speed to 130 (same as France I'm told?) it would make a great difference. Unlimited limit????? The fools would no doubt wreck it for the many. Usually the way I've found in the past.

                              Motor - What crap

The guy who wrote the Motor article is a toss-pot.

He starts off by saying he filled both cars to the brim.
He then flogged them both to within an inch of their lives, with the GT obviously struggling to keep up with the more powerful (and lighter 3 door) GTi, and after only 200km of thrashing, declares the GT has piss-weak economy!

What sort of test is that? He says that the claimed 7.2 l/100km was a joke. Mate, you're a joke! That 7.2 figure is a combined Australian Standards figure, part city, part country driving. Not part traffic light drags, part racetrack, part twisty mountain road. Sorry, but I hate ****heads who don't know their own area of expertise (he even thinks the GTi has ventilated rear discs! He could try reading the specs...or even looking at brakes!)

As for the range, when the initial 420 GTs runout, they will be replaced by the apparently identical GT Sport which will include the 125kW diesel version as well. The Sportline petrol & diesel will go extinct. This should be in about October when the next shipment is due to arrive. Rumour has it that a 1.8 litre TSI will power the next GTi (2 litres and above apparently doesn't work very well with TSI - too much reciprocating mass and too much friction as capacity increases). And a 1.2 litre version (or the existing 1.4) will power the Polo GTi.

If you haven't guessed by now, I have a GT and love it. Much as I liked the GTi, it was a little hard (for me). The GT looked to promise a good compromise between performance and economy, and although only a week old has delivered in spades. BTW: economy for the 1st tankful? 7.4 l/100km. This was a mixture of city (280km) and country (390km). And no, I don't drive like a Nanna. The $5K I saved on the GTi wasn't the point - it delivered 90% of the performance, 95% of the equipment, 110% of the comfort, and 110% of the economy. For me, good enough. I'm not dissing the GTi at all (I still love them), it's just not ideal for me and my circumstances. Whatever spins your wheels...
