Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Oil For GTi?

As most people have already stated in this forum, I'm finding that my GTi DSG is using a bit of oil during the running in period. The oil warning light came on at around the 5000 km mark and when I checked the Dipstick got a bit of a fright when the oil level was way below the min level. I called my nearest service dept in Newstead Brisbane who said I had to buy the VW specialised oil from the dealer. When I discussed my concerns about the low level of oil in the crankcase, they said that at a pinch, i could put Mobil 1 in as an acceptable substitute.I duly put a litre in and felt much better. My Question is: what do other GTI owners top up with? the VW specified oil, Mobil One or something else? Also, I was talking with a patient of mine who is a service mechanic for Subaru who suggested checking out the Caltex Australia website-if you specify what make and model of car, they will tell you which Caltex Product is suitable. Their recommendation for 2007 VW Golf GTi DSG is Havoline Synthetic 5w-40.Anyone try this? Would be grateful for any thoghts or suggestions!

All engines will use more oil when new. Not just VWs, as long as you don't baby it all the time the consumption will drop off noticeably.

As for only buying oil from VW, pffft, just a way of hammering your wallet. In the handbook it'll list the type of oil you should be using and in what grades. You can go into any high street motoring outlet and know they'll have something that meets the standards required by VW.

Ive never had to top up in the 75,000kms ive done although it does seem to be quite common that people have to do so.

Although i dont do it inbetween every 15000kms i have done an oil swap myself inbetween each 7500 or so and have used mobil 1 synthetic, seems to do the job....VW only oil is hilarious..those guys never cease to amaze me

They must ship it over in a big VW tanker powered by a veyron engine or two

My (yellow) oil light came on at about 9500klm. Was duly concerned and rang the VW Roadside Assist number. They advised me to buy a litre of Mobil 1 Synthetic oil. Comes in a gold coloured container.

VW only oil? HaHa. Do they have VW only air inside the dealerships?

Just like it's always the last car in Australia. Just like they can't actually give you a price and what?!? you would like to read the terms and conditions before signing oh btw vw stickered things only, from us only, thanks.

What Motul oil are you using and is it ok for running in an engine?
