  • MkV R32 OEM battery specs and drain issue!

    Hi all,

I recently bought a MY07 Mk5 R32 from a big Sydney dealer, and after the first 4 days of owning it the battery was flat! After being told the battery not covered by stat warranty, I bought a Century battery from battery world, and after 2 days of not driving the car, that was flat too! I took the car back to the dealer where it spent 1.5 weeks having the issue investigated.

They said the reason the drain was occurring is as the battery I put in wasnt to spec. I find this hard to believe as the guys at battery world seemed to be all over it, and had the original battery in front of them! The dealer replaced the battery to what they said is the OEM one and said that fixed the drain problem. I'm yet to leave the car a few days and find out if the problem is fixed!!

Im not auto elec, but I smell something fishy, and suspect they have put a massive battery in there, hoping the problem wont re-occur until after the 3 month warranty!

Long story short, does anyone know the specs of the original OEM battery for the mk5 R32? Ive searched long and hard and cant find it anywhere, and no longer have the original battery. I found a post but that spoke of the mk4 R32. I also suspect they have also put in a cheaper battery as the one they have put in is a lead one, I think the original is silver/silver?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

    Chris

PS. havent changed the head unit or done any other mods to the standard car! Saw that is an issue with the CANBUS.

You can take the car to auto electrician and have the parasitic current drain checked or invest less than $100 into the digital volt/amp meter and check the current drain yourself.
Here is some info that could help. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f136...tml#post393486

What are the specs of the batteryworld battery and how much did it cost? I'd put my faith in the VW dealer well before batteryworld.

If they sold you an OEM battery (I assume you have the invoice so post the part number and details) it will be the same size as standard. You can't fit a higher capacity battery in the space in the boot without going to a different type of battery $$$.

The original is a lead acid, post the specs of what they installed and I'll see if I can dig out the oem specs and I expect they would match up.

I had this battery problem, swapping two batteries in four days, arguing with SuperCheap manager , found broken harness in the rubber boot going to the driver door. I placed picture here: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f15/...tml#post542616 . The can bus and power wires were broken and insulation damaged. I tried to raise this with stealer and VWA, but they just ignored me.

So far so good, had the car sit for 3 days and it was ok.

          Maverick - the battery they put in is a varta lead/acid one - 000 915 105 DH, 12V 80Ah 380A DIN, 640A EN/SAE

The battery that came out of the car was a silver/silver one I think. I know it was going to cost $500 to replace. The one I got was a Century DIN75LC (I dont have any more if it's details), and it cost $219.00.

The guy at battery world was an auto electrician in a previous life, and mentioned that both the century one and the one originally in the car have similar cranking amps.

          ???Thanks

So did you have the battery 7 charge system checked at that point?

Was this a big Sydney VW dealer or another brand?

Did Battery World do any checks of the old battery & charge system & subsequently the new battery.

What model battery did BW fit?

I took the car back to the dealer where it spent 1.5 weeks having the issue investigated.

Sounds odd that it took them so long to diagnose. I would have thought BW would have a clue. Looking up a catalogue isn't hard 7 having the other battery in front of them makes it much easier.

What battery did the dealer fit? I actually find it hard to believe that VW stock OEM batteries in Australia. they'd be one of the few dealers that bother IMO.

Go and get your charging system checked by an Auto Elec. It will cost about $50 and you will get peace of mind.

Original battery is a lead/acid AFAIK. I've never heard of a silver/silver battery. BW might also have used a calcium battery or possibly a dry cell

              Thanks for your replies,

The battery model they put in is listed above. Could have been a calcium one that came out of it and the more expensive option BW mentioned.

So far so good...after a few weeks the car has started easily every time.

The thing that worries me is the Century battery was killed in 2 days. The +ve terminal cover under the bonnet was broken when I got the car, suggesting the previous owner or dealer had similar battery issues and had to jump start it, breaking the cover in the process.

The car came from a big Audi dealer in Syd, and not from VW.

Thanks, if anyone has anymore info?!
