I was looking into getting either a jetta or skoda rs in diesel. Are these cars fine to run on standard diesel or do you need to run them on premium diesel, thanks.

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I would be running it on premium diesel, however i believe you can use standard diesel.
The better fuel economy witht eh premium fuel and the cleaning agents included are worth the up-front cost imho.

I have a 2008 GT TDI Golf (purchased new) with the 125kw diesel engine and as I don't have access to premium diesel in my area it has always been run on standard diesel. I still average 800 - 900 kms a tank with a mix of city / hwy driving. I never let the fuel run too low and the most it has taken to refill was around 50 litres @ 860k's travelled. They have a 55 litre tank capacity so it would still have been good for a few more k's. I wouldn't mind trying a tank of premium in it, I'm guessing the main difference will be the Cetane level in the fuel but as I have already used a Cetane booster additive a while ago and found little or no difference to either economy or performance than I'm not really sure that the higher price of the Premium diesel would be worth it either. The biggest improvement I have found for both economy and performance was achieved through remapping, I'm running a performance map not an economy one and the 800 - 900 k's per tank is based on the performance map as well. Well worth the investment. My .02c worth anywayLast edited by Russ59; 12-11-2010, 02:54 PM.Russ

I've got the same car as Russ59 (although not remapped) and I'm using standard and normal diesel. The premium has a slight economy advantage in my experience, not sure if it's worth the extra $. Can't say I'm getting the same range as Russ though. Mostly Hwy driving and I'm averaging about 850K's but filling up 55L (the tank filler pipe holds a significant amount

I have used both premium and regular diesel in my GT ( with re-flash ) . Don't notice any difference what so ever in either fuel economy or performance. I think those that claim to feel something different are just trying to justify the extra expense of the premium.2007 Black Magic VW Golf GT TDi, Latte Leather, Sunroof, Bluefin Superchip, 18" Detroits, APR lower torque arm insert, APR Carbon Fibre Cold Air Intake system, GTi sideskirts & front lip, R32 Rear Bar, GTi Steering wheel, RNS-510,Infinity BassLink Subwoofer, stubby antenna, R8 Oil Cap, Golf R front calipers, slotted front rotors, ceramic brake pads, LITEC LED tail-lights, Dension Gateway Five, Rear Emblem Reverse Camera, H&R Ultralow coil-overs, Badge-less front grille
