Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Missing cover in engine bay TDI

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This cover on what appears to be a air intake was missing on a GT Sport TDI that I looked at. Why would it be removed?

It shouldnt be too hard to replace right?

I've seen a few that have fallen off, I suspect they're not installed correctly. If you're unlucky (or lucky from another perspective) you'll find that cover jammed in the cooling fan. Alternatively you may find parts of that cover in the fan or parts of the cover in parts of the fan. Usually they're just sitting on or around the undertray though.
If you can't find it then they are easy enough to replace, not sure how expensive they are.

they are reasonably cheap from your vdub dealer and always available since they are the same on so many models...
      no stress, good luck

Do you need the engine cover? Does it do anything?

Good question. I'm thinking it may insultate the bottom of the bonnet from the rising heat?

I've not run one for two years now. Decreases noise, looks pretty, retains heat, slows access for tinkering. Mine is a dust magnet.

YEah I noticed you don't have one. I might remove mine too.

Sorry to dig up and old thread here guys, but after a little help from the MKVI GTI owners if they look at this thread.
Can someone please let me know the part number on the underside of your air intake cover (as in where the red arrow is pointing).

It has three small clips and then just pops out.

For reference, mine is Part No. 1K0805965J

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

If you find that part to be expensive you may want to consider spending the cash on one of these - it will replace that missing part.
