Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 20" Wheels?

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone has fitted 20" alloys to their cars?

Got a mate selling his set of K-Speed Biaggi Black and I've been eyeing them out for quite some time...

My guess is I'm pushing my luck a little with these....

this is interesting, i want to know the result if you go through with this, 20" wheels would be epic! but make sure its dumped or else it would look like a monster truck

ive seen a couple of cars pull it off before. Looks fine so long as the wheels are tasteful and not some horrible 20" chromies.
As above you need the stance to do it properly otherwise it will just look silly

i've heard it said that anything over 17/18" wheels is purely cosmetic and you loose weight/comfort/performance ability.
oh and they cost a bomb, not to mention the rubber $$!!!

touring cars/V8 supercars use 17" wheels i think.

that said - big wheels can look good.

Yeah you can put 20" on a golf. Seen a few pics as well, but it has to be the "right" design to look right with the car, plus you do need to have the suspension to pull it off.
Probably look at conservative offset (closer to 50), 8" wide and got nice and low over them
Not sure which K-speeds they are exactly, but most K-speed wheels I have seen I personally wouldnt think suit a golf (in nay diameter anyway).

Slower accelaration, worst handling and braking.... what is there not to like about 20s?

I see people on 20s, I think to myself 'fool'.

              Depends on your priorities.....?
I personally think 19s on a mkv are bang on (really don't see the point in buying 18s, especially if you buy nice expensive ones).

A great deal of people are scared to go over 17" ^^^, which is also a "why bother" spending money at all idea.

              Depends on wheel design.

17" is the optimum wheel size for the GTI so why would many people want to get larger?

20's can look great but I'd be more worried about the firm ride, especially with lowering which is essential with such large wheels. Mine became quite firm after lowering and then even harder after going to 18's over the factory 17's. I've been advised by a number of Golf owners with 19's that the ride is unbearably hard so I can only imagine how bad it would be with 20's.

Depends by what yardstick you measure? I have been out Wollombi in MkV GTI with 19x8.5 on 235/35, tandard suspension and it was not "harsh at all". Same roads in one with Bilstein PSS coils and it was definitely firmer but not unbearable (I have mates with pulsars with pedders spring/shock combo and/or BC coilovers so I guess that's my measure). Or closer to home, my Mk3 is less jittery than dad's MkV and it's slammed so....
