  • possibly buying a mk 5 Gti - quick question..

    Hi All,

after much waiting i'm getting close to buying a MK5 Gti

Its from a non VW dealership and they can put a 5 year warranty on it through Integrity, integrity also do the RACV extended cover but this would be a standard gold cover direct with Integrity (5 years @ 1200 bucks i think)

Quick question - has anybody had any good / bad experiences with these guys?

Its an 2007 model so out of the 3 year time limit to do another VW extended warranty (though Allianz)

Any opinions gladly received - i looked at the car last week and took it for a drive, apart from being scared of the brakes (Coming from a MK1) i LOVED it!! loved the DSG as well.....

also whats a 60,000k service likely to cost?

    Cheers

    Gary

The problem with most of the warranties outside of VW is that they often have a limit, say $1000, and if a transmission goes (highly unlikly) then they wont cover the whole thing.

Altough i know nothing about this warranty your getting, most of them aren't worth it.

Also worth considering whether they lock you into their dealer network for servicing, and how convenient that is. If they do, there is no point in telling you the market cost for the 60k service as they'll dictate that.

yup just checked - on the 5 year warranty it s 2k limit per claim on the gear box - although i think thats not bad....i might hold out and see if i can get a 2008 model and then get the Allianz VW warranty ....

        Cheers!

To be honest I wouldnt touch a non dealer extended warranty with a 10 ft pole, i had one on my B5 A4 and it was worth less then the paper it was written on. When ever something broke or needed replacing on the A4 they found loop holes in the fine print which got them out of paying anything..

hmmm so i guess i'm best of with a 2008 model and then buying the extended VW warranty?

That will cost for the car but not point short cutting on this i guess - time to talk to the bank manager!

2k for a blown box wont get you very far. Considering a new DSG costs around 10k. I saw some after market ones somewhere for about 6k.

I'm looking at a 2009 model as well which has warranty and i can extend so lets see how it goes

Pay more for an 08+ car, and have peace of mind with the full vw warranty. And u can extend the factory one by extra 3 years before the original expires. I think non vw warranties arent worth much at claim time...

If you plan on modding your car (which most people do to these little beauties), warranty means cactus! They wont cover anything that could have been caused by even a slightly related mod.

You could still opt for the VW used warranty and get good coverage. My son just had the a/c compressor replaced on his '05 GTI through the VW extended used warranty plan and has had a few other things done which have all been covered. I would check with Jaz Hokin at Southern Classic Cars in Wollongong or one of the other VW warranty consultants first. All you would need is the VIN / Chassis number to confirm it, and mention that you're a member of VWWatercooled forum for a better rate. By the way the '05 GTI was 4 years old and out of warranty when he purchased it privately so extended used warranty through VW is a viable option and i would consider a much better option than any outside warranty group would offer.

i didnt know that.. so my 06 gti could possibly still be eligible for a vw extended warranty even though its been out of dealer warranty for over a year now? ..Does it matter if ive had it serviced at non genuine dealerships?

As long as has been serviced by a "Qualified Mechanic" you will be fine. If you make a warranty claim they may request service records to see if has been done to VW specs.
