  • Aftermarket LED Running Lights

99% of my driving is spent on highways and a normal run with my lights on 100% of the time. I want to install some aftermarket LED running lights (DRLs). I have looked into the imitation ones sold cheaply on ebay and have ruled them out. These are for safety first and looks second. I found these units on TM Tuning and like the simplicity and the quality (as far as I can see).

Has anyone had any experience in fitting something like this to a MK5 Golf/Jetta?
Easy Job? or expert fitter only?
Any other options for DRLs that I have missed?

I've also seen some DRL's that are housed in body coloured mouldings, so they look factory. If I find them I'll link you.

          Thanks uberdubber.

I want to try and install them so that they are on when the ignition is on and have the lights switch in the auto position. I think I need to see the instructions that come with the unit first though.

My first problem is removing the fog light grill.

I have noticed that the Jetta has a piece of molding that sits over the top of the fog light grill but I can't work out how to remove it. Any suggestions? I don't want to risk breaking any clips.

          Edit: excuse the bugs

I worked it out. I found instructions in the manual. The molding is attached to the grill. See the instructions below for others in the future.

I like the idea of the DRL , one question what is the pull out option on the light switch for? Only had my Jetta for 5 weeks so don't know much about it . I postulated that it may be for driving lights or DRL (not fitted to my Jetta,) any ideas?

              Cheers Dave L.

It turns on the rear red fog lamp only. For use in low visibility.

hahaha, i had that problem the first time, took me 30 minutes just trying to get the damn thing off, after i did one, the 2nd one took 20 secs. i think i just pulled it out with a bit of force, dont blame me if anything breaks, i just know mine came off quite easily. o yea, for me, moving it left and right helps a little bit too

O btw, I got mine grill from them. TMTuning is quite good with their products, i think it beats buying on ebay

I just fitted the slimline LED DRL from TM-turning. I won't suggest you buy the one in your pic. As the slimline LED DRL is curved, it fits the fog grill really well. Fit properly it looks as if factory fitted. Also imho, the slimline LED is built up to OEM quality and very bright. Just a few tips if you want to fit the DRL in the fog grill.

                      a. The fog grill is pointing downwards slightly, so you need to fit you light pointing a little bit upwards. Otherwise, since LED have very narrow light emit angle, all the light emitted will just go to the ground. I didn't realize that first time, end up had to pull it out and re-fitted. The slimline DRL output most light +/- 15 degree vertically. You'd at least fit it level. I would suggest a little bit upwards to ensure max visibility.

                      b. I used back silicon sealant to glue the light onto the grill as I couldn't find any solid mounting point.

                      c. I fitted the DRL into the lowest slot in the grill on my Jetta, since it is the easiest spot. I suggest brow Dremel tools as you still need shave some plastic to let the lift fit seamlessly. In my case, I have to cut quite a bit to make the light point upwards for the reason stated in piont a.

                      d. I hock the power supply into the fuse box in the engine bay and the blue control line to the low beam. So when low beam is on the DRL dim itself.

Don't hesitate write to me if you need some help. Go ahead and have fun.

Also, to take out the fog gill. Yes, it is difficult. First time, I end up took out the bumper to figure out the underneath structure.

I suggest you mask tape the surrounding area to prevent scratch to the paint.

For the left grill, start from the right edge, pull hard but firm and bit by bit. The plastic is actually quite sturdy, don't afraid to brake it.

I saw a parked blue MKV R32 in Malvern/Glen Iris just off glenferrie rd this morning with the DRL in the front lower side grilles; looks OEM. It wasn't turned on obviously but the fit and finish looked great.

hua_qiu, some great tips. Any chance of some pics of the installation and wiring? I am a visual kind of a person.

The slimline units were the other ones I have been looking at. I don't trust ebay for this sort of thing; you get what you pay for.
