  • First day with my new VW

So I picked up my new Jetta TDI (stock) this morning after a 4:35am coach from Nhill to Ballarat. Very happy.

On my way home I got diverted of the Western Highway due to an accident. What a shame that I had to drive through the Pyrenees and other back roads with no traffic, windy roads and an extra 1ookm to get home.

    USB power line
When I got home (and after my kids did a through check of every switch and dial) I made my first change. I didn't like where the power outlets are in the front, very inconvenient spots, and I need power due to long distance driving.

I ran a usb extension lead from the boot to the fuse box next to the drivers door where I plugged in my phone charger. It is mostly hidden on it's journey, but it sure tidies up the front.

Thank you VW for putting power in the boot so that I can power my phone in the front.

I used to hate those early morning bus rides to the city.. (I'm ex-Warracknabeal-ian) always adds more sense of occasion to what you're doing though...

Congrats on the purchase, and great idea with the power socket extension, very neat!

      Cheers,

I couldn't understand why in such a well thought out car the two front power outlets where hidden under the ashtray lid so that you have to have the ashtray open, or in a location so that any adapters plugged into it interfere with my coke bottles.

      Rant over - solution found.

The Jetta looks very nice and clean. You will love it,thats for sure.
I see from the number plate that it is a 2007 model.
        Congratulations.

What other cars did you consider, and what car have you come out of ???

I have been driving an 08 Lancer for the past two years and on the roads that I use it was breaking my back. My two top needs were comfortable seating and fuel economy over long distances. That's a tall ask.

I also felt that buying new defeated some of my sustainability concerns about the energy used to make used cars.

          Cars looked at:
          • Holden Cruz - Too cheep looking interior and the seats were too small.
          • Peugeot 307 - too many reliability problems. Too sloppy over rough roads.
          • Golf Mk5 - The Jetta appealed more with my job.

          Jetta won hands down.

I am sure you made the right choice.

Was your Lancer the current model ?

Its quite good looking, the old one was one of the most bland cars ever produced.

It is the current model (sportsback silver). Good looking car and it would be fine around town but on the back roads it was very tinny and light. Average seats too. Was great sideways on dirt roads though.

The Lancer sedan is so good looking, but the sportback hatch is completely ugly IMHO,but not as bad as a Subaru Impreza.

The Jetta is a diffirent kind of motoring, far more comfortable and solid.

You are going to love this one...

Keep us informed as to how you are enjoying it.

                Cheers.

                  hi InMused,
just like to know, you plug the usb in the boot at all time? even it is not in use and the engine is off? would it consume the battery? i try to leave the car charger in at the ashtray and it light on even i turn my car off, so i am not sure it may or may not consume the battery? or would it cut the power off after you lock the door or something?

Thanks Pow" you make a good point.

I just went out and checked and the 12v point in the boot is not live when the ignition is off. Good thing to check though.

He has a later model, it was only MY06's and earlier that left their accessory sockets live all the time, MY07 and later are only live when the ignition is turned on.

did you say you have two front power outlets?

Do the Golf V have two as well? I can only see the one in the ashtray, but it would be good to have another at the front.

Yes, it is forward of the center console storage bin. It is not is good position as it interferes with any drinks stowed in the drinks holder. To my mind it would be better located inside the center storage bin along with any media interfaces (usb and ipod). The one in the boot is much tidier for more semi-permanent fittings IMHO
