  • Noob question - Bluetooth

    G'day all -

I got my 07 Golf GTI today, and I am in love!

It has the phone button on the tiller, but I am guessing it won't have bluetooth unless it has a phone holder?

Also, does an ipod lead come standard? Mine has one, but I didn't expect it to.

I searched for the answers but found nothing of use.

    Thanks, Linc.

Just with my experience, if your car has the MDI (Media Device interface), then it'll only come with a standard USB adapter for any other mp3 device other than iPod. The iPod lead was an extra $85 on top of the price of the car.

I have the integrated bluetooth, so it doesn't have the phone holder. But one telltale sign is the little microphone that sits just to the right of the sun visor.

    Hope that helps.

If it has bluetooth with the micropnone on the A pillar or behind the wheel its the older kind of "ego talk" the newer bluetooth it could have fitted is the "Nokia" one that you cant see anything as the microphone is hidden away.....|Easy way to tell is jump in your car with ignition on and radio on and search for devices on you bluetooth phone, if it finds, "ego talk" or "VW" you have bluetooth, if nothing comes up on the search then you only have the factory button on the wheel and need to get a kit fitted...............vwtech....

OK, thanks fellas. Yeah I searched for things, and only found my hot neighbour's phone's bluetooth. Not bad from 10m away!

I never thought a new(ish) car could be so hard to learn! I am no tech-noob, but this car is really complex!

When you search, the car has to be stationary and I think the ingition has to be on for accs.
Please correct me if this is wrong. Also mine has a manual just for the blutooth but if you've bought second hand it might be gone. Still you should find it online somewhere.
My Ipod lead is in the glove box. Not standard. ~$400 if I recall. All I need now is an Ipod. I got the attachment for the children.

Yeah I guess I have no bluetooth.

I do have an ipod lead, in the drivers storage area above the pedals though, so that is a minor win.

Has anyone noticed how much fun these cars are to drive?

I end up grinning like a loon everytime!

The car is a MY07 so will have a second generation head unit and won't have a MDI fitted.

Factory bluetooth (like the Skoda kit) has the microphone fitted into a hidden compartment in the overhead console as well and there are no controls to show that it's there other than a screen on the MFD (If a full height MFD is fitted) or a display on the head unit (if a third generation unit is fitted). So depending on the type of bluetooth fitted there may be no tell tale signs and the only way to tell is to search from a handset after starting the car.

Yeah I did a search but my phone didn't find it, however now that I think about it, the ign may not have been on...

If it stops raining, I'll have another go.

So GTIs come with the phone button standard, irrespective of whether BT is installed?

The car can be moving, speed doesn't play any part in the pairing process.

Yes all GTI's and many other Mark V's come with the phone button if they have the MFSW. The button is only used with the fixed car kit which is not sold in Australia. This is mentioned in your manual IIRC which I would strongly recommending reading from cover to cover a number of times.

Thanks Mav - Yeah I have read through it a few times -

Another stupid question - When trying to access the settings menu (ign on, hold the button with lines on it) nothing happens. Is a VAGCOM necessary to access/change settings, or am I stuffing it up somehow?

Sorry again for all these questions - If there is a better place for these questions, let me know.

Maybe different for different models. As stated in the manual, mine won't allow set up of the connection while moving. Once set up, yes, it will automatically connect as one drives off.

Do you have the full height MFD? I'm guessing not as if you don't have factory fitted sat nav the full height MFD was not available until the MY08 GTI/GT/R32 when it became standard on these models, later on it became standard on a few other models. Your car could have had factory fitted sat nav and it was removed by the dealer before it was sold but they always leave the GPS antenna on the roof and the full height MFD in the car.

Nope, I have the half height MFD, no sat nav either, and a normal aerial on the roof.

I think I will just make sure I have BT on my next car, it is too expensive to retro fit it to mine.
