Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

Do Aussie Mk5's have bumper foam?

    Do Aussie Mk5's have bumper foam?

    I've bought an R32 rear bar to put on my GT Golf and I'm unsure If I need the Foam Bar insert.

    Does anyone know if the Aussie Mk5 Golfs have the bumper bar foam behind the bar as shown in this picture of an R32.



    I don't seem to notice it on this exploded view that VW Australia sent me so am unsure If I need it.



    I image it might only be a US thing as their number plate sections are more narrow than our Euro spec ones ( maybe there's a US foam and a Euro Foam ?? ) but I guess the only way I can tell is to just rip mine off but I'd rather know before hand so if I do need one I can have the part ready to install straight away.

    I assume the foam part covers part 1 on the exploded diagram.
    Probably stops it rubbing on the inside of the rear bumper and also improves pedestrian safety.

      Yes it covers part 1 of the exploded diagram but as you can see its not there on the diagram.

        I just had the rear bumper off from my car a week ago at the smash repairers and i can confirm that the foam was definately there.

          yep, we have it front & rear, its actually part of the deformation zone.

            According to VW Australia that part is no longer available to buy as its superseded so I guess I'm going to have to either trim mine or just don't use one.

              When I installed a tow bar on my brother's car last weekend it didn't have it and would have been binned anyway as the tow bar replaces the bar.

              Oh, the photo is not an R32 either unless they've changed the exhaust.
