Fed up with waiting for new Polo GTI, considering 08 or 09 Golf GTI

Hi Guys,

VWA seem to be taking their sweet time bringing out the new Polo GTI here. I have gotten to the point where I need a car sooner rather than later.

I have been looking around and having test drive the current Golf GTI, it seems to be quite a nice car.

My budget is about 37k.

I have been looking at late model 08 and 09 cars with low K's.

Anything I should be looking out for? I will be getting an extended warranty from VW for my piece of mind.

Preferably DSG as well, as having driven the DSG model 2010 car, I found it quite enjoyable.

You might be doing yourself a favour by doing so too. Apparently the 7sp dry clutch DSG boxes in the Polo GTI have been quite problematic overseas. The MKV GTIs come with 6 Spd Wet Clutch DSGs.

For that budget, you could also look at the Limited Edition Pirelli's. They also have more power (169kw) due to having a larger Turbo. Leather seats and limited edition wheels are also standard.

Interesting. I have seen a couple on carsales.

They seem like a better all around package (the Pirelli Edition).

I'll certainly have a look at those as well.

GTIs don't come with any 7 speed dry clutches - too many horses for the 7 speeder to handle! Wet only for the GTI.

At thirty seven you are nearly into mark vi 3 door territory. In my view the late 08/09s are vastly overpriced.

I think the OP was looking at the Polo GTI - and those come with 7spd dry clutches.

If you're looking 2nd hand VW For $37,000 I'd be looking at an R32 over a GTi. There's a few DSG versions going around for that sort of money.

I agree, I think a 2yr old Golf Gti is a much better car new then a new Polo GTI. There is a reason why polo's are 15k cheaper to buy then Golfs.

My local stealership is taking orders for the new polo gti but from what I understand you'll be waiting at least 12 weeks before you'll take delivery.

The Pirelli edition has a number of engine upgrades other than the turbo alone, which means there is alot of potential for more power. If you thought the normal GTI had great potential already from just a tune for instance, you would be simply amazed at the power gains attainable in the Pirelli.

That said, at the end of the day, there is only so much power/torque you can realistically dial through the front wheels; a standard GTI with a tune producing over 180kW of power is already rather close to the usable limit.

I'd agree with jessV3 that a late model Golf GTI is a better option than a new Polo GTI.

Will a GTI with 200kW be too much of a handful? 4motion is one thing I like about the R32, but power gains are much more limited compared to the GTI.

Just having a browse around the forums, the general consensus is that the Golf is the better car.

I have found a couple of Mk VI and Mark V's that I will be checking out this weekend.

Hopefully report back with some good news over the weekend.

Just goes to show how good VW's marketing and pricing strategy has been. If waiting times have increased from launch then they must be taking more orders than they can fill in a short time. Which also means that discounts will be far and few between.
