  • Looking at Buying 2006 Jetta 2.0T FSI - Common problems, things to look out for?

    Hi All,

I'm about to start looking for a 2nd car as a daily driver and am quite interested in the Jetta 2.0 Turbo DSG's. I've found quite a few around at reasonable prices, mostly 2006-2007 models and was wondering when looking at them if there were any common problems i should look out for.

Also i've heard many horror stories of DSG boxes failing, is there anything i can look out for regarding these?

    Thanks in advance!

Not sure where you heard that but the reality is that DSG boxes don't "fail" and there have been very few replacements of the whole box in Australia whereas there have been some problems with mechatronics units having to be replaced which again isn't widespread and the replacement is due to operation of the clutches or gear change being out of specification and not due to failure of the unit.

These Jettas are basically bullet proof and well built.

I had a 2006 TDI Manual for 4 years just moved it on last week, this was a great car I did 150,000 Km in it.
Rear Brakes replaced 70,000km Fronts done 110,000km 3 sets of tyres.
          Not one break down.
Paint and Panels in good shape for usage, interior fitting wear showing a bit of wear.

I cannot fault this car it got me into VW's I have since brought 2 more.

I agree, the Jetta's are a truly faultless car. I haven't had any issues with mine yet and I've got about 63,000km on it (and is for sale.. hint hint). Although in saying that, I've heard a few issues arise from the South African built Mk5 and Mk6's out there.

I think the South African, and Mexican build quality is very much on a par, both pretty good by the way.

I should know,I have had 2 of each...

I've had more problems with my CC in 6 months compared to 4 years with my Jetta. The Jetta is a fantastic and reliable car, mine was completely faultless, the only problem I had (if you can call it a problem) was a rattle in the sunroof which was easily fixed by greasing the track. DSG is awesome !!!!!! Driving other cars now seem so average.

Only issues I've had with my 07 TFSI DSG are strut bearing and rear front suspension arm creaking.

Noticed a few popping up on grays online auctions lately.
End of the 3 year leases with custom fleet.

Just try and get something under 3 years so you can extend the warranty for another 3yrs.

Well we did it! Last week we purchased a 2006 2.0T FSI jetta in white.

We're both extremely happy with the car, immaculate with a full service history. I'm thoroughly impressed with the balance of power and economy the car has and loving the DSG gearbox. It's definitely surprised me just how much go the car has for being stock, especially how quickly it comes on boost, seen the traction control light more in the last week than i have in the whole time i've owned the bora!!

Now i've just got to resist the temptation to mod the Jetta...

Congratulations,I think the Jetta is a little upgrade from the Bora.

Are you going to be keeping both Boras ???

Post pics up of all of them, that will be a good looking shot.

My Jetta DSG has been faultless and was, similarly, <3yrs old and under warranty, which I extended as recommended on this forum.

There's a used car buyers guide story on drive.com.au this week, noting these cars are a very good used buy and 'overserviced and under driven' compared to other cars.

The Grays one is the best colour, too, haha.

Here's a link to the Jetta review in drive.com.au
A new Drive.com.au Used Car Review: VW Jetta 2006-09 [Link]
                          Pros
                          • Petrol turbo has heaps of performance.
                          • Turbo diesel also good but has brilliant economy.
                          • Good standard safety package.
                          • Classy feel.
                          • Ride/handling compromise about spot-on.
                          • Many have been pampered.

                          Cons
                          • Looks pretty conservative from most angles.
                          • Stablemate Golf is probably more versatile with five-door layout.
                          • Over-shadowed by new sixth-generation Golf models.

This model has often been overserviced and underdriven, making it a smart buy, writes David Morley.
There is a list in the review of the most common used car faults for this car.
