Hey all. Lately my golf has being having occasional 'grumpy' starts. It does not sound quick, but instead turns roughly before starting. Sometimes not starting. About 80 thousand on the clock. I've had a search of the forums, but have not found anything. Thanks for any experience and help
could be your battery on its way out they dont like it when the battery starts to die. the tdi,s need a good crank over 200rpms to start. a bad batch of fuel maybe with all the water weve had lately or could be a coked up egr valve or air intake flap sometimes stick shut and wont start.
Thanks Bushnut. I checked the maintenance free battery, and looked in the window...but it gave no clues or reference. I even checked the battery website varta batteries, but that gave no clue as to charged state of battery. How can I find out which it is to rectify (before paying someone to look at it)? cheers
Transport. I just had a look and with the digital multi meter set to second setting - "V" with an upper solid "___" and lower 3 broken "---" I got about 14-14.3 with engine running with high beam on, 12 with lights and accessories off. I don't know how many cold cranking amps, power reserve etc this batter is as nothing like that on top. THe inspection well which on another battery is red to throw out, white to charge and green is good. This VW battery does not appear to have any indicators like that???
An automotive electrician had a quick listen to the startup. He is not sure until pulling it out, but thinks it is the starter motor. Anyone else had this experience? Whilst there, he put the multi-meter on it and told me the battery read 260. He thought the battery should be normally about 500.
After learning here that a lower battery can lead to a lumpy or hard startup, he said both were independent of each other.
Has anyone else had similar issues? My golf is end 2006 and just over 80 thousand kms. Serviced every interval. Thanks everyone
I have had the same problem on and off since I bought the car from new. I've got 127k on the clock now...sometimes I can go up to months on end and then have the problem. Reported each time it got serviced at VW and they could not fault. They kept telling me to leave the car there overnight..I knew this would be a waste of time as it happened so random that leaving it there knowing my luck it would start no worries.
My friend reckons it may be sucking air into the fuel system? Don't now what it is...
Also I changed my battery...doesn't fix the issue.

Hi mate, check your engine code, if its a BKD then its a easy fix for a dealer.
It will probably require a engine ecu update to start with and after that the battery needs checking, if its poor rated you will need to replace it, after that then the starter motor is tested, must be over 280 rpm crank speed with the injectors disconnected!, If below this your injectors wont fire correctly causing slow poor start.
Sometimes you need only one of these 3, some BKD engines require all 3 to sort out the fault! See how you go....
Hey, thanks all. I had the battery checked and it came back at 25% (Varta DIN 65 LH) looking for a replacement . As with speedster, it is not all the time, and does appear 'better' with all power off. I'll have a look and try to find the "BKD" engine code and post back. I'm off to check the compliance plate

Had a few crank angle sensors playing up too. Battery check is easy have it load tested to see where it drops to. Carbon pile test is the way, el cheapo drop testers dont cut it. By the way if you are over 3 yrs on the Battery you are on borrowed time anyway
Good luck
