  • Looking at purchasing 1.9L TDI MK5

    Hi guys,

New to the forum and looking for some advice please.

I have the option of buying from a family friend a 2006 1.9L TDI Comfortline.

The car has just clocked 70,000kms and I might be able to get it for ~$18-19K, as they are moving overseas and looking at selling it quickly.

    My only questions are:
    - are the 1.9L TDI engines good, or is it worth hanging out/saving more for the 2.0L TDI?? I know the 2.0L TDI has more power and torque, but the 1.9L didn't feel too sluggish at all when a took it for a test drive.
    - Is there anything that I should look out for in a second hand Golf from this era?? The car is very clean and has been serviced regularly at the dealer, with all stamped log books and records etc

any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

I would go for the 2.0TDI, i have heard they are much better.
There was a query about that a few days ago.

    What spec is the 1.9?

Here's a good read for you.

Also goggled VWWatercooled 19.TDI and see what you can find.

The performance from the 2.0 is better, however the 1.9 still has plenty of torque and is relatively bullet proof. I've got a MK6 GTI and a MK5 1.9, and the MK5 has plenty of poke for when I need it.
If you can afford a 2.0 then I'd recommend you should consider it vs purchasing a known car with a known history.

          Good luck with it all.

The 1.9 is great, me and a friend swapped cars for a few hours (she had the 1.9) and sure, compared to my 2.0 with the tune (which is for sale ) it's a little slower but I still wouldn't say no. Besides, you can tune them to 100kw I think.

Decided to go ahead with the 1.9L...should be picking it up next week!!

The fact that it was coming from a 'known source' and had been looked after really well was a major decision in my factor, as well as being able to get it for a good price.

With the money I've saved I'm considering a Bluefin ECU flash to give it a bit more poke, but I'll see how it goes first.

Good call, barely run in at 70,000.
Mate has a 1.9 and loves it, especially in country cycle where it kills our 2.0 for economy, with lotsa deisel-y torque for the lumps.
