  • Jetta Towbar

    Hi guys

Getting a quote for a towbar for the Jetta and apparently the wiring harness comes with electronics to convert fibre optic signals to electrical signals, and costs $700 for the harness alone!

When I ordered my Jetta in January I asked the dealer about the towkit (expecting $500 ish) and when he quoted $1600 I almost fell out of my chair. Needless to say, I skipped that option.

As I understand it there is a bit of stuff to install including a CAN controller for the trailer lights and changes to the ESP/ABS to account for the trailer (probably just VAG COM for this).

The manual mentions that the trailer module does the cold start lamp test on the trailer lights just like it does on the car lights.

Eventually Hayman reece might come out with a kit but you're still gonna need the module to run the lighting.

I've just picked up my Jetta from Barloworld at Mascot. Tow package was $1150 excluding GST (fleet car). I was quoted over $1800 retail from Newcastle.
They did a fairly neat job fitting it. It has a round 13 pin socket and they supply a cable to convert it to the standard flat socket. The owners manual says if the tow package is fitted at the factory, that the ESP system provides a trailer stabilisation system. Probably doesn't apply to Dealer fitting though.
