  • New to TDI Ownership

    Greetings,
After owning a Jetta TFSI DSG for 4 years, I have passed it on to my (MK4 GTi owning) son and have acquired a very low mileage Mk 5 Golf TDI 2.0 6 spd.
I like the grunt of the diesel but, as is my habit, I will be fiddling about with it to make
it a bit more interesting to drive and look at.
First up, I am replacing the standard 15" wheels with 17" alloys, shod will Pirelli p7's and I have GTi Front brakes to go on at the same time.
I'd like to hear from TDi and Mk 5 Golf owners re. recommended mods.
    Cheers,
    Jetta DSG

You want to look at a ecu remap (superchips, customcode, oettinger) and you also want to look at a bigger intake.
Also have a look at the tinkering threads in teh diesel section as Greg has done some great work on his tractor to get some more power out of it.

Congrats on going TDI. How are you enjoying the difference from your previous Jetta TFSI?
Let me know if you plan on doing any drives to Wollombi as a small group of VW people often drive up to Peats Ridge and sometimes Wollombi.

I've got the same car (the 103TDI) and have both front & rear GTI brakes, plus Koni FSDs and Neuspeed springs, so you should come for a drive to see what it's like. Currently on 18s, having been on 17s before that.

What 17s did you get? From someone here? Should I look out for you anywhere on the roads? It's pretty rare to see Jettas in Sydney with visible mods.

I'm halfway between change intervals and am considering an oil change and cleanout of gunk from the engine.

Get a catchcan. Period. TDI's choke on their own emission sludge ( EGR plus oil blowby ), and it will definately decrease performance, economy and longevity.

I'd recommend a visit to the VW dealer if it has over 30k for a flushout, otherwise, get the best catchcan system you can afford.

Any of the name brand chip tunes will give the 103kw what you are after, but given there's been a few 103's do their turbo once chipped, pick one of the more widely used tunes. Heat is your enemy in a chipped 103.

Beyond that, it seems the airbox lid, and the axle level exhaust resonator in the exhaust are the two big red flags for inlet / outlet restriction in the MKV 103, and the two things I'd suggest non DPF TDI's would benefit most from. Obviously you can go to town beyond that, but those are the big, obvious two in my opinion thus far.

Oh and pull the big plastic leaf grid out of the bottom of the airbox!

I have now had ECU Reflash (Bluefin) and taken leafgrille from air cleaner box. I have a catchcan on order from the US.
Greg what is the suggested mod regading the airbox lid? do you replace the axle level resonator with straight pipe. Does this make the car drone at constant / freeway speeds?
