  • My 08 GTI

I hadnt ventured on here for a while and thought why not throw up a new thread for my GTI.

I have owned the car for nearly 2 years and was inspired to move to the VW world from the subie world after looking through a few threads on here and realising how fun you could make these cars. Its been a wonderful 2 years of ownership and this is a car I can see my self holding on for quite a few more years

    Current Mods:
-3" X Force Stainless Steel Cat Back Exhaust with custom 314 SS Mid Pipe
    -Forge Spacer
    -Bilstein PSS Coilovers
-DTM 18X8" ET40 Wheels with 225/40R18 Pirreli P Zero Nero Tyres
    -GIAC Tune.
-Second set of wheels 19X8 ET44 RS4 Wheels with 225/35R18 Falken FK452 Tyres

    Future Plans:
    -20% Window Tint
-Roll the guards to give me some more clearance in the back
    -3" Dump Pipe
    -Whiteline Adjustable Rear Sway Bar
    -Possibly colour code the lowers
    -Vortex Front Lip

How it looked when I brought it:

    Then the 19s went on:

After trialing with some resonator deletes and after market resonators, I saw a new near X Force SS Cat Back exhaust on here and decided why not give it a try. Previous experiances with Xforce had been good and it turned out pretty well on my car.

After finding out how badly the mid pipe between the cat and rear axel had been munted by the local exhaust shop with previous experiances I had my local exhaust shop premier make up a 314 SS Mid Pipe for me:

With the cat back exhaust the car dynoed earlier on this year making 138KW at the wheels:

I then got sick of how the car sat and decided to do something about that and decided to fit some Bilstein PSS Coilovers:

End result being a much smarter looking golf which can attack corners much more confidently:

After this I decided to get the car tuned, going down the GIAC path has had a profound affect on how the car performs, it is stronger everwhere in the rev range and actually has a nice little kick which the car lacked in stock form. I havent had a chance to throw it on the Dyno yet, so I will have to wait and see what it pulls next month at the dyno day.

More recently I decided I wanted to go for a new look and get some more comfort with some chunkier tyres, timing was perfect as JDM Yard had recently imported some new DTM wheels from New Zealand. I opted for these wheels in 18X8" ET 40 with a set of Pirelli P Zero Nero's on it:

Definitely looks better with the black wheels. Those 19's just look too big.

          Agree completely.
          Love the finished look.

I would be getting some hollow honeycomb grill inserts and grey out the Vw badge next.

Resonator deletes and whatnot - I'd be real keen to hear your experiences there - I was thinking of heading down that path 1st up for a bit more noise and flow without much outlay - What's the best option and is it even worth it? Cheers.

I wouldnt waste my time with it, completely removing the resonator results in a ****load of drone and the car sounds raspy as hell. Sounds alot better if you remove it and replace it with a smaller aftermarket resonator and the drone is more tolerable. Save your self the $200.00 or what ever it will cost and wait until a good second hand cat back pops up. Not long back I saw a AWE Engineering cat back for $450.00 which would be a much better option

Ahh ok, not quite the cheap and easy win I had envisaged then. Cheers for that - probably saved me a bit of hassle. I should really have learnt my lesson by now with trying to do exhausts on the cheap at the local 'muffler shop'. Always seem to get a rubbish result and end up spending heaps anyway. I've never had a 'classy' cat back system and dam yours looks sweet!

By my calculations you picked up a bit of power off from that system. Would be really interesting to see how you go with the dumpy and whether you think it's worth it...

Car looks great. Couple of questions

                      1) Is a cat back and turbo back exhaust the same?

2)Did you end up getting a dyno result after your ecu tune?

Cat back exhaust is from the cat, turbo back is from the turbo.

I think the dyno may have been reading a tad high, but the cat back did free it up a bit. I wont find out the difference a dump will make as im putting the car on the market in mid february

Cheers mate, they are PSS's pretty much Bilsteins alternative to the other non damper adjustable coil overs on the market.
