  • Aiming the high beam lights

After a very wet run up the coast last weekend - the GTI lapped up the rain that caused the floods around Maitland - I realised that the fog lights did precisely nothing - so now I've managed to adjust the fog lights so now they actually do something. Could be useful next time I'm driving the back roads around Kurri-Kurri and Maitland in the rain.

But I found that the high beam lights are also badly aimed for country driving.
Fine for seeing 1km ahead on a straight piece of freeway, but not much use on tighter roads, where some fun can be had.

I looked at the lights, and looked at the manual and the "maintenance" guide and can't work out where the adjusters are. Surely they can't be fixed in place.

Any suggestions anyone? I like country driving at night, but I do like to see where I'm going.

What were you expecting the fog lights to do? And what did you do to make them "actually do something"? And does this affect their intended use (ie. to aid your car being visible to oncoming traffic in foggy conditions)?

Other than that, I've found the high beams on our Mk5 to be pretty good.

Updated - Adjustment procedure to correct Jetta high beam aiming problem UPDATED!! - Thanks for the many positive comments to this post! I have incorporated some new information that you might find helpful. NOTE: If you have trouble printing this, try coping the entire set of instructions out...

It's for Jettas but may apply to Golf also.

Rear fog lamps are only there to make you visible to other drivers however front fog lamps are not just to make you visible - they are meant to be used instead of your low beams as they project under the fog and give less glare.

As they came from the factory they projected about 1m in front of the car. They now project about 5m, and give some effective side lighting.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was after. The golf adjusters look exactly the same.
I didn't think of trying the main adjusters as they looked like they were for the low beams, and didn't think that they would do both together.

it looks like to much trouble. I'll just wait until I get pulled up by police, that is if, and then take it back to a dealer for adjustment
