Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • wind buffeting noise at high speeds

For those who've taken their R32 to the track or have a private airfield, have you noticed a loud wind buffeting noise when speeds reach 140kph and over? It appears to be coming from the left side of the windscreen. Nothing appears to be loose and once you go below 130kph the noise dissipates.

I noticed this on the weekend (2 door GTI) but at around 120kmh.

Seemed to be directly over the top edge of the windscreen. Surprising.... but I'm hoping it was the very strong cross winds around at the time

I checked the trim pieces on each side of the windscreen (outside) and they seem to have a soft rubber part. Perhaps this gives way a little with strong wind, thus making some noise?

    cheers

Hmm, not sure what the reason is. I suspect there's not much difference with the GTI in the body but it's strange since these cars were meant for autobahn work.

I don't have an R32, but on my Jetta TDI I get a loud wind noise from the drivers wing mirror at high-ish speeds. Say, the speed at which the headlights turn on automatically.

the windnoise is surpringly high at times on my 3door GTI

Not sure if the sunroof contributes (even when closed). Happens on some days, but on other days it's much quieter.

I still wonder whether it's the strong prevailing winds
