  • RNS510, prices, canbus and other related discussion

I know there has been a fair bit of discussion about the rns510 in other threads but it's starting to get tricky to sort through all the information.

What prices have people paid off eBay/dealers/etc for the rns510 and details of eBay sellers/dealer information.

What problems have people had with the install and links to threads with solutions.

Models of mark v golfs that need canbus upgrades.

I picked one up for $1150. I had an issue of the steering wheel buttons not functioning after the install but after some research a firmware update fixed the problem.

Does anyone know if I need to upgrade my CANBUS if I install the RNS 510? I have a 2007 built MY08, has the full sized MFD... so of all the info I've read so far I'm still confused if its plug and play for my car.

I also need to sort out a bluetooth option. My car already has bluetooth and it works great from what I've seen. Its the parrot version. I'd be happy just to plug that back into the RNS if it fits... anyone know???

I know that you will not have to upgrade ur CANBUS as I have the same year model and was direct plug and play. From memory you only need CANBUS update for 2006 and older models.

As for the Bluetooth im not sure if the parrot kit is compatible with the RNS510. It may still work, except you wont get any functionality from the RNS510.

Thanks Big Al... the budget is tight, so not really wanting to throw more cash at buying the full blown BT on top of the RNS 510. I can live without the RNS integration. It's only a weekend ride. I just need to answer the phone when I get a work call when oncall!

What's involved in upgrading the CANBUS? reason i ask is my 05 GTI recently had the head unit changed to a double din Alpine unit. My installer spent hours though trying to program the buttons on the steering wheel, the issue is he got the volume and mute buttons to work right away, but couldn't get the back and forward buttons to work, he told me he did research on the CANBUS for my car, but he couldn't find much info, compared to the 04 or 06 models.

I think you need to have a adapter installed such as the Connects2 to get the other buttons to work.

Cheers for that. Is there anything more local though?

Just found A great guide for diy install of the rns510 on vwgolf.net.au. Answered the questions I had so thought I might share. The info is from a few different forums, including this one.
