Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 19" wheels on a MKV GTI

    Hi,

I have been somewhat inspired by a lot of the GTI's i have been seeing in the pics section and am thinking about making a bit more of an effort with mine.

One of the things that seem to make a real difference to the look is larger rims. Im currently running 18" Kathoriums (spelling?) and like them but am also eyeing off a set of 19" audi rims on ebay (Audi A8 Mag Wheel's 19" Orginal still in the Box - eBay Wheels, Wheels, Tyres, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 15-Aug-10 17:59:08 AEST)).

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice to give about going to 19's. Do i have to play with the suspension, or will the car support it by default? Do 19's significantly decrease the ride quality (cant say i noticed much difference when i went to the 18x8's).

Also, anyone know what type of tyres are good to run and dimensions?

Thanks for any time taken to respond.

19's would make the ride harsher as the side wall will be quite small so the bumps will flow through the car more.

Should just get a suitable tyre size to make the 19's legal, no suspension work would be required imho.

I think you would need to get a 19" that isn't very wide such an a 8" and then you'd have to get the correct offset. I've been told the ride becomes harder and of course the tyres are more expensive to replace. I've seen a lot of Golfs with 19's so i'm sure it can be done. By the ways its Karthoum.
